"Something" The Beatles - Cover - Home Project Studio

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I've uploaded a cover I did here at home with my project studio, It's a cover of The Beatles "Something".

http://snd.sc/d0KHNx

All the instruments except the bass are Virtual Instruments. The vocal work was done by a friend from icompositions.com. I have a lot of fun making these, and learned a lot during the making of this one

For anyone interested a gear rundown is provided below.

Audio Interface - Presonus Firebox
DAW - Logic Studio 9

Bass - Squire CV P Bass, Stock Pickups, Carvin flatwound strings.

VST's:
Guitar - Pettinhouse Humbucker Free
Organ - N.I. Vintage Organs - C3 and Leslie
Strings - N.I. Session Strings - Motown legato
Drums - N.I. 70's Drums - Vintage Tight Kit

FX:
Bass - Line 6 X3 Live - Fliptop amp and cabinet
Guitars - N.I. Guitar Rig 4 - Started with a Scofield preset and tweaked the heck out of it. Biggest change was switchig to an AC30 amp instead of the Fender clones.

Various compressor and reverb plugins, notably the PSP vintage warmer and waves L3 Limiter on the output buss.

Nice job. A few notes are suspect. (The riff after "don't wanna leave her now") and the "A" before the bridge he's playing off of the open string. Check it out.

A lot of McCartney's greatness is also his feel, which is very relaxed and slippery. It isn't just hitting the notes, but sliding into them with just the right amount of pressure. It's also the positioning. A lot of the higher notes are up on the neck on the lower strings.

Not to be critical, but these are all specifics. (I hate when people criticize using ambiguous terms or just saying they didn't like it).

McCartney is an understated and underrated genius of the bass guitar. It doesn't take long to figure out the notes (which is why novices aren't impressed), but it takes a lifetime to appreciate his brilliance.

Pretty much all of the above. I played a phrase on an akai MPK25 untill it was in the ballpark. Then when it was close, I went into the piano roll and tweaked it.

I'd do a pass (or more) after the notes were recorded and add key switches where appropriate, mess with the timing, velocity, etc until it sounded a little more human. It's not perfect by any means, I did it to learn more about midi editing. It helps when I have something to work on that I'm familiar with hence the cover.
