Aaron Barrett from Reel Big Fish claims that the song 'She's Famous Now' is about when he used to date Gwen Stefani. It has never been confirmed...

Also, many of Rage Against The Machine's songs are based on real events.

"Bells of Rhymney," covered by The Byrds, written by Pete Seeger and Idris Davis.

It is about the General Strike of 1926 in the UK, which began in the coal pits of Wales. Seems quite relevant today, as the unemployment and fall in wages of the miners (to below subsistance) set the whole country on a path toward throwing the fat cats into the fire. The fat cats had private armies and suits in the govt., so they won. Surprise!

There is a form of Italian folk song originating from Southern Italy called "il canto di malavita" which literally translate to songs about a bad life, life of crime.
These songs are written by 'Mafia" members to glorify their exploits.
Some can be extremly gory.

The Dark Liege of Chaos is Unleashed At the Ensorcelled Shrine of A'Zura Kai (The Splendour of a Thousand Swords Gleaming Beneath the Blazon of the Hyperborean Empire: Part II) by Bal Sagoth.

But really, uhm...Dead Skin Mask by Slayer is more or less inspired by real events.

Lots of death metal bands have songs about serial killers, such as Aborted. I can't name any from memory, however.

Mick Jagger was another possibilty...that he was singing back-up vocals helped fuel that rumour.
I thought of that one, too, but the real pieces are a little sketchy. Carly Simon auctioned off the real identity of who the song was about under promise that it would never be revealed publicly. I can't remember who won, but think it was someone famous in the music business.

How could I forget. Tons of Iron Maiden songs are based on true events. I don't know if that has been mentioned already though.

I listen to reggae man, so most of those guys talk about things they see going on around them, just like rappers do (although most rappers don't get as political about what they choose to write about).

Linton Kwesi Johnson is a dub poet who rights about his growing up in London and his experiences. One of my favorite songs of his is More Time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozL1rmcI-eY

Live version, he talks before the song explaining, but it's not on the vid sadly. Groovy simple bass line.

Almost everything on "Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs." "I Looked Away", which starts the album, is pretty explicit. "Have You Ever Loved a Woman", a cover chosen perfectly by Clapton, has guitar playing so shockingly intense that you know it was inspired by a real event.

Buffalo Springfield's "For What it's Worth" chronicles the 1966-1967 riots on the Sunset Strip.

Hendrix's "Spanish Castle Magic" was inspired by a nightclub where he hung out as a teenager, the Spanish Castle.
