I think that Tool made an too much of an effort on Lateralus to make long songs..

a lot of ska uses bass as a lead instrument and guitar for rhythm, which I am a fan of. sometimes horns are used for a lead, but those are usually only for little compliments to the choruses or whatnot, very few songs keep the horns going through the whole thing, which leaves it on the bass to create a melody.

"For the Love of Money" by The O'Jays. Anthony Jackson's bass line got him a writing credit.

For bass intro, I'll nominate Here in my Bedroom...one of those things that got me into playing bass, because it just sounded so cool. Also Californication gets credit. It's one of those songs that when people say "You play bass, huh? Play something." that people will actually recognize.
Okay, one more....Man on the Moon by REM. |
