Songs with Fast Sixteens

Sign in to disble this ad
After some time spent playing in very simple projects I have found myself a bit out of shape, fingerstyle-wise. I have a lazy, easily tiring right hand! No good! So I am looking for some songs to practice with that feature fast, tight 16th notes.

I am currently working on Stockhome Syndrome & Hysteria by Muse and Parallel Universe by RHCP.

Any other rock suggestions? Would like to find maybe 5 or 6 more to practice in a set to build up some endurance.

Before anyone chimes in - yes, I am working with a metronone!

Most Tower of Power songs, Rocco Prestia is the master of 16th note funk. "What is Hip" is a great example not rock, but it will help. Also Steve Harris from Iron Maiden is known for his ability to play fast "gallups".

More non-Rock that will help-
"Everybody Dance"-Chic (faster 'gallops' than Harris, IMO)
"Kuru/Speak Like A Child"-Jaco
"Used To Be A Cha-Cha"-Jaco

Whoo weee! You'd better stretch before trying this one!
Question: Didn't he play this with a pick?
Another Jaco tune is "Invitation".
One thing I'd like to suggest is playing scales and arpeggios. Start with 1/4's and work your way up to 16's. The better you get, the lighter your touch will be, and then you'll get sweet stacato bounce happening.

Rocco Prestia/Tower of Power is probably the best known 16th note type player. He has a video and a book or two out as well.

You could do some metronome work as well.

Agreed. If you can do that, you're pretty much the man.

Try "Fight Fire With Fire" by Metallica.

Another sleeper is "Operation Spirit" by Live. You can do that one fingerstyle and slap. I will play through that one and alternate my approach to get a good warm up.

I have to second the Rocco stuff. Always a good workout.

Whadda I know...I can't find that blasted DVD!
The one time I recall seeing Chic on TV, Edwards had his back turned to the camera; at the time, that made me go "Hmmmmm".

Same 'pattern', basically as "Kuru" & "Cha-Cha"...and there's others I'm drawing a blank on right now.

As you're practicing with other Muse songs, try "Butterflies & Hurricanes" too.

The main albums I used to build up my finger style endurance were Iron Maiden's 'Live After Death' and Metallica's 'Kill Em All.'
