Songs that have helped you through hard times

I am asking, because I am having a hard time at the moment too. Break up/new beginning kind of thing.

So, what songs have helped you through whatever troubles in your life?

For me, at the moment, this song is describing my situation spot on:

Ben Harper And Relentless7 - Fly One Time - YouTube

I hope I can take the leap and fly one time. "It's complicated".

Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up," with guest Kate Bush, is a gorgeous and extremely moving song, with a message of inspiration.

Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush - Don't give up (first version) - YouTube

Makke - hang in there. This sounds trite, but, as George H said, All Things Must Pass. You'll get through it.

Morphine ~ Cure For Pain. The song and album pulled me out of a pretty major depression during my junior year in college.

Thanks everyone, I will listen to every of these. Thanks for your kind words, Tampa.
Ironically, what this song is about is what I don't have here right now, but what I wish I had. But I guess it's out there to be found.

Fly by Night by Rush always makes me feel like a stronger person. It gives me the feeling that whatever happens is ultimately my choice, and that the rough situations in life don't have any power beyond that which I grant them.

Wow - alto sax (I believe?) + a bass ? Intresting. Is that a gibson bass he plays?
I think I am straying away from the subject

I hate to admit this but here goes.... every time I hear Winger's "Miles Away" it always reminds me of a girl I was going out with in college. That song was big at the time (late 80s, early 90s thereabouts) and she used to love it (and Kip Winger, too, I suspect). Whenever I heard it I would realize that even though we had broken up and she's "miles away" I would get through this pain. Now it's just a nice memory of her and those times.

Hey pocketgroove.

Those lyrics really hit the spot for me at the moment -descibes my situation very well - but the form is just too weird for me I guess Rush just isn't my thing.
Still a good positive song, just what I need

Well, even for me Rush was an acquired taste; it took a little while to get accustomed to. at any rate, I'm glad the lyrics helped.

Amy hit the atmosphere and colorblind by the counting crows.
Also 'Waiting for my new life to begin' and 'I just don't think I'll ever get over you' by Colin Hay.
When I'm having a hard time, I tend to listen to really sad/depressing music. I like to listen and just let it all out, you know? Once I do that I feel cleansed, in a sense.

On That I really like that isn't really sad is Drive by incubus. It reminds me not to be steered by my fear, and to face what tomorrow holds head on.
Good luck OP. stay strong!

Wow, this is creepy. This is exactly where I'm at - I could have written this song this morning (no, I couldn't have, but it feels like it). Thanks for pointing to this one, and thanks for the encouragement.

I feel kind of silly for saying it, but honestly this song did...

Yeah, I thought about that, too, after watching the video again, and hoped that it didn't bum you out. But, in a way, the couple embracing (Gabriel and Bush) is about friendship and support, etc, more than romantic love, or it could be interpreted that way. So, I guess, the message ... draw close to friends and family during the tough times. And, you know, it gets better.

Glad I could help. Colin Hay is really underrated, one of my favorite singer-songwriters ever.

Two more good songs I just thought of are 'how's it gonna be' and 'motorcycle drive-by' by third eye blind.

I went through a tough time over the summer, and a big thing that kept me going was listening to music like this. The big upside to all of it is that I found some incredible artists with an incredible amount of emotional depth in their lyrics.

2 songs, both by Tom Waits

Tom Waits - Blue Skies - YouTube

Tom Waits - Martha (album version) - YouTube

Stuff just tore me up but made me feel better at the same time.
Good luck.

Wings for Marie - Tool

Specifically, part 2.

That song is about Maynard's mother, but if you were to change the lyrics from her name to my mom's name, it could very easily be about my mom. My mom passed away about the time that album came out. That song became equal parts therapeutic and difficult for me to listen to. All I can say is yes, it helped.
