One of the things that helped me get through a bad depression was playing lots of Motorhead very loud and shouting along with Lemmy. (Yes, I'm being serious.)

I'm not sure what bass Sandman used on the album, he played a number of different basses over the years. Morphine is a pretty unique band and is definitely one of my favorites. Of there all-too-slim catalog The Night and Cure for Pain are my favorites. Sandman died in a manner that I would be okay with: on stage in Rome.

Anither vote for Peter Gabriel here, but even though I like the song my vote is not for "Don't give up".

Rather it's for a single line in the chorus of San Jacinto.."I hold the line, the line of strength that pulls me through the fear"

The two songs that have helped me most through break-ups, mainly in aiding me to "move on" have been:

The Clash - Train in Vain
and
The Marshall Tucker Band - Can't You See

Strangely both involve trains... weird.

Hope this helps and things may or may not get better... but at least they wind up different!

I Could Have Been A Dreamer-Dio
Hold Your Fire(whole album)-Rush
And one that's just a feel-good song that I love no matter what my mood may be, Monday Morning by Fleetwood Mac.

This is a nice playlist I use, I had a tough break up also. By the end, you'll feel better, I promise. Well, for awhile at least (;
1. Hey Jude- Beatles
2. Stranger Things Have Happened- Foo Fighters
3.Something In The Way-Nirvana
4. A Tout Le Monde -Megadeth
5. Best Of You- Foo Fighters
6.These Days-Foo Fighters
7. You Can't Always Get What You Want- Rolling Stones
8. Walk-Foo Fighters

Yes, I'm quite the Fooologist.

It doesn't apply to your break-up situation per say, but I can't listen to Paul McCartney's 'Sitting in the back Seat of My Car' without feeling better about whatever.
Big positve groove!

I like "Yours is No Disgrace" for the same reason. I listen to it if I'm upset when I lay down to go to bed at night.

"Jumping at Shadows" by Peter Green is pretty heavy, and it's sad to listen to, but if I'm already feeling pretty bad it does help. I hope you find your light at the end of the tunnel; unfortunately Peter Green never really did.

After a 13-year drug addiction, Rush's "The Enemy Within" really spoke to me and gave me inspiration as to what I was missing in life. Music being one of those dreams I was destroying. I've been clean for 15 months and loving every day of my life. -Luke

Things crawl in the darkness
That imagination spins
Needles at your nerve ends
Crawl like spiders on your skin

Pounding in your temples
And a surge of adrenaline
Every muscle tense to fence the enemy within

[Chorus:]
I'm not giving in to security under pressure
I'm not missing out on the promise of adventure
I'm not giving up on implausible dreams
Experience to extremes
Experience to extremes...

Suspicious looking stranger
Flashes you a dangerous grin
Shadows across your window...
Was it only trees in the wind?

Every breath a static charge,
A tongue that tastes like tin
Steely-eyed outside to hide the enemy within

To you, is it movement or is it action?
Is it contact or just reaction?
And you...revolution or just resistance?
Is it living, or just existence?
Yeah, you! It takes a little more persistence
To get up and go the distance

Playing your bass is the best thing to keep your mind from other problems. I have found that when I play bass (or any instrument), my mind is fully engaged in what I am playing and doesn't drift off to thinking about other things. If I try other distractions, I don't focus as well. For example, I have tried to read a book and found that I have no idea what I just read because my thoughts drifted off to whatever I was worried about. Same thing with watching TV, movies, etc. However, playing makes me tune the bad stuff out and focus on my playing. It's sort of a therapy I guess..

Great call on the Collin Hay song..... fantastic songwriting there. In case someone isn't familiar with it, here is is.

Waiting for my real life to begin - Colin Hay - YouTube

In that vein, "Gentle Hum", a song written when the Finns were facing the passing of their mother, is a stunning piece of work. I can't find that song, so I'll post it later. Meanwhile, here is "Won't Give In", off the same album. Great Great Song

Finn Brothers - Won't Give In - YouTube

And speaking of "Meanwhile", an album of the same name came out in 1995 featuring Richard Page and Patrick Leonard / Third Matinee. I was going though the worst period of hell. That whole album saved my life.

Third Matinee - Freedom Road - YouTube

Early John Lee Hooker. That man has sympathy.

I meditate to 'Let It Be' by the Beatles. Works well as a positive boost for me; it starts very calm and mellow, levels me, but by the end, singing along with Paul makes me feel I can do anything.

"Walk On Medley" by Boston, from "Walk On" album. More applications in my life than I can cite, going back to mid-90s.
