Music is all about emotion as far as I'm concerned, so if a piece of music has the power to move people to tears of sadness or joy then the songwriter has done a great job. Loads of music makes me cry but mostly because it reminds me of people or events in my own life. The list is too long but selected highlights are:
The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset - I had an inseperable childhood friend and we both reckoned it was the perfect pop song. He died about 10 years back and this song gets me everytime.
Peter Gabriel - In your eyes - It just speaks volumes to me
Meditation from Thais by Massenet - My son used to play this on violin and I used to come home from work to hear this drifting from the house when he was practising it, it just makes me realise how proud I am of him
Paul Simon - Father and Daughter - Pure sentiment, but if you've got a daughter you'll understand
Bach - Sheep may safely graze - It was the music I walked my daughter up the aisle to at her wedding, and by pure coincidence the music that the organist was playing as I walked behind my fathers coffin at his funeral just 4 months after that wedding. The juxtaposition of the same piece of music capturing tears of joy and of deep sorrow, and knowing that at least my dad got to see his only grand daughter get married is just too much |

Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. Anyone who doesn't get moved by this has no heart.

My father had alzheimers really bad, didn't know anybody, couldn't talk to us.
He had an accident in the care unit that he was staying in. Got caught up in the divider curtain and hung by his neck. We had tears in heaven played at his funeral by a solo guitarist. | Dude. So sorry. We lost my stepdad to Alzheimers, I understand.

Just too close to home for me. How's the phrase go? "Been there, done that"...
