Sonicflood - Grant Norsworthy

Sign in to disble this ad
Whats up guys,

I recently got a hold of Sonicflood's album "Glimpse" and I am completely floored by Grant Norsworthy's tone in each track!

I even emailed him through the Sonicflood website asking what his setup was, but who knows when he'll respond, that is if he does. I figured maybe I could get some help from here while I wait.

It seems like he often plays a Fender P/J, and I know he endorses GK. However, I don't know if he used that fender and GK gear during the tour.

Can ANYBODY please help me find out how I could replicate his tone? It's super growly and fat. Sometimes it sounds like he's using a bass like a Warwick Thumb, but he may be using mild overdrive too.

I am in a search for this tone, and am afraid that the search will never end! Please help!

Hey OshKoshJoash, I had no idea that Grant Norsworthy was playing for sonicflood these days! He's an Aussie, quite a cool guy, and used to play in the Paul Colman Trio, who were very popular in the small christian scene here a few years back. I had the oppurtunity to spend some time hanging out with them back in 2000, back then he was mainly playing a Stingray5 (looks like he's still playing that from recent photos) and a Cort 4 string ABG, and wasn't using GK amps, so I can't shed much light on that, but as for the OD, I know he was a big fan of the SABDDI back then and got some really nice overdrive from that. The only thing I can say about the Fender is that from photos it looks to be an old, somewhat beat-up Precision with an added J pup at the bridge. The headstock logo appears to be CBS-era, but the body finish looks too worn to be poly to my eyes.

I havent heard the record in question (I'm not really into sonicflood) but I would be inclined to think that a fat, overdriven tone from this dude would have something to do with the Sansamp (if he's still using it).

Thanks for shedding some light on the question Nick..

The record definitely sounds more like a P/J than a Stingray, and it would definitely make sense that he'd be using the SA BDDI.

I could imagine him using the P/J, with overdrive, while pushing his amp until he gets that GK growl.

I may be foolish, but I'm thinking of swapping my LMII for a GK 1001RB now..
