Soooo FUNKY!

I was listening to some non-commercial radio, and the show that was on was playing mostly old rock and soul.
Heard a song "knock yourself out" and man, it was FUNKY!
I'm thinking "whoever this bass player is, he is old school GOOD!"
Just crazy good space and syncopation.
So I go home and look for the song on iTunes, and it takes a bit to find it because it's a pretty common song title.
But it turns out to be...
Tower of Power! ROCCO! circa 1976.
BTW, this is the version from their live album "Live And In Living Color", different (and much cooler than) the version on Youtube (which ain't bad).
Much more space than some of his playing, which makes the syncopation even more over the top. And just plain old knockout funky.

Live And In Living Color is an album well worth spending a lot of time with. Learn every note of every song if possible, the album is full of incredibly musical bass playing... playing of all the other parts too for that matter.

Oh yeah!!

I just bought The Tower of Power Anthology [Warner Archives] a couple of weeks ago

Prestia is the man! Songs still sound as fresh and powerful as when they came out.
I have a lot of their stuff on vinyl. I just wanted some hits for the ol' iPod!
