Soul and R&B

Sign in to disble this ad
My band are wanting to add some Soul and R&B type covers to the mix, but I don't know much about the genre as far as recordings/artists. Band suggestions include:

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Proud Mary
The Doors - Roadhouse blues
Tracey Chapman - Gimme one reason
Steeler's Wheels - Stuck in the middle with you.

So please, recommend me some Soul and R&B to get a handle on playing the genre!

Curtis Mayfield-
"Stone Junky"
"Freddies Dead"
"Superfly"
"Move on up"
"Underground"
"Billy Jack"
"Little Child Running Wild"

Bill Withers-
"Who is He (What is He to You)"
"Use Me"
"I Don't Want You on My Mind"

Meters-
"Funkify Your Life"
"People Say"
"Just Kissed My Baby" <- this one kills!
"Jungle Man"

Al Green-
"I Can't Get Next To You" <- another killer!
"Here I Am (Come And Take Me)"

Gil Scott-Heron-
"Lady Day & John Coltrane"
"Pieces of a Man"
"When You Are Who You Are"
"Grandma's Hands" (Bill Wither's tune that Gil does better)

Robert Palmer-
'Sneakin Sally Through The Alley"
"Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)"

Michael McDonald-
"I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)"

Lenny Kravitz-
"It Ain't Over 'till it's Over"
"Believe In Me"
"If You Can't Say No"

[edit]
I'm taking liberties to include some stuff I'd fill with if putting a Soul / R&B band together...

Truthfully Soul and R&B have had their definitions altered over the decades... so they've become as generalized as saying you want some "Rock" tunes to learn

I do have to say that Soul and R&B is not the first thing that comes to mind from the majority of the suggestions you have.

I would reccomend Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Donny Hathaway and stuff like that. You can even go into some funk like Earth Wind and fire
