Spin got it right - OK Computer

Sign in to disble this ad
I know this best album business is subjective, but I think Spin Magazine got it right.
They named Radiohead's OK Computer the best album of the last 20 years. That's an enormous statement and I'm surprised to find that I for once agree with the critics. This album is the ONLY rock album of the last 20 years that has grabbed me by the b@lls and refused to let go. I'm not an enormous Radiohead fan as a whole, and I love this album. It is amazing. It has literally brought tears to my eyes and I'm not sure why.

They didn't put Kurt on the cover again, did they?

I used to read Spin pretty regularly when I lived in the states and enjoyed it. Only two things that bothered me:
1) They worship Nirvana way too much
2) They worship Radiohead even more.

And I like both those bands.

Not sure, I've never read the magazine. I just caught the news blurb on CNN.com or something.

As for staying power in rotation, emotion grabbing, intensity, and all that lot, I'd have to agree.

Lambast me for saying, but it's this generation's Dark Side of the Moon...and that album is hardly played out (to me) in its own right. I really do feel it's that good.

My only quibble: nix "electioneering"...a decent song, but it doesn't fit the flow of the record.

I have not been a fan of the last few efforts by Radiohead as whole coherent pieces of work, but the Ok Computer they just got so utterly right.

And yes, that mag has both hands massaging Radiohead's sack at all times. It's almost embarrassing.

I have a strong dislike for SPIN. They're like Pitchfork sans the enjoyably vicious reviews, haughtiness and the drool bib. They're too fawning and they're just always 2 steps behind what's happening. At least Pitchfork is semi-on top of their stuff.

Either way, OK Computer is a good middle-of-the-road inoffensive pick. I enjoy it every now and again, Paranoid Android is a great song.

Some very wise choices in there, but a terribly chosen order imo.

OK Computer is a masterpiece though, it and DSOTM (yes I know, overly popular choices) are just pure perfection to me.

what's that stand for?

anyway, as far as the cure goes, i'd have expected to see disintegration or pornography up there. the head on the door is really good, but...those two are far better.

does this mean that top-100 lists AREN'T actually definitive and infallible!?!

Sorry, DSOTM is Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon.

I can't help but notice the following glaring omissions: Faraquet's _The View From This Tower_ and Don Caballero's _American Don_ and _What Burns Never Returns_. Or (perhaps a bit more seriously) any Sigur Ros. I'd put together my own top 100, but I'm not sure that I have 100 albums from the past 20 years.

Many of these don't fall within the last 20 years.

A friend of mine burned a copy of 'OK Computer' for me to listen to. I got about halfway through it, ejected it, and tossed it out the window of my truck.

Haven't listened to anything after 'The Bends' since from Radiohead.

From this thread, though, I'd gather I was in the minority!

That Spin list reads like a 'best albums of the last 20 years if you're primarily a music "critic" that wants to feel important, hip, and connected'. The Smiths in the top 10?? Give me a BREAK! Three metal albums? No Pantera, Matthew Sweet, or Lenny Kravitz?? THE STROKES???? Come on!

Ugh. Top 100 lists are like a**holes - everybody's got one and they all stink.

IMO, Remain in Light is still the best album ever made after DSOTM.
