So, my band are about to record our EP! We've opted to record it ourselves and with our own gear, so I have a few questions for anyone with experience in this sort of thing:
How would you suggest I record the bass? In the past when we've recorded I've found that I got the best result by plugging my bass into my SansAmp, then into a Presonus Valve Preamp and then directly into our interface, though we also have two different kick drum mics (an Audix D6 and another one which is more egg shaped and sounds a lot better, I THINK that it's some sort of Shure Beta mic but I could be completely wrong). As well as those we have a couple of 57's, some Rode vocal mics etc but I don't think any of those are suitable for bass? Would you suggest that I stick with DI'ing or mic up my rig? I have a Hartke 3500H head with a LabSystems 410HLC cab.
Ideally I'd like a tone similar to what Duff has on Appetite for Destruction, any tips on getting something like that?
Check out the link in my sig to listen to a previous recording we did (the demo of On The Run, the other two tracks up there were done in a studio a year and a half ago and I don't love the bass tone to be honest, though I don't dislike it either it's just not as prominent and gritty as I'd like).
Secondly, we've decided to use Drummergog over the snare and kick drums in the EP, just to get them a bit bigger and meatier sounding than we can get with our gear and experience, though we're having a bit of trouble finding good samples to use. We have taken a snare out of another recording and blended it with our own with a bit of success, though the kick drum is proving hard. Any suggestions on sample packs that sound good to check out?
Sorry if this was a bit of a wall of text! Thanks! |
