Steely Dan - Home At Last

How great is this song?

I have been listening to this albumn for 30 years and it was always one of the greatest for me in its entirety, but I just am now realizing how REALLY great this track is. Chuck Rainey absolutely kills it on bass as does everyone else.

Absolutely perfect!

agreed. a real standout, and to stand out from their catalog is really something.

I still like the studio version best, haven't seen a live version that comes close...any suggestions?

I am still a drooling, frothing fan of the Dan since I was a kid!
Here's my tribute band from 2004 at rehearsal with our version of this song:

My fav song on "Aja." I wish Fagen and Becker hadn't used Tim Schmit as a backing vocalist, though.

Michael McDonald can't sing on everything. He needs a break once in a while.

Hard to pick a favorite from that album, but this is right up there.

Check this out - it's a great interview with the recording engineer from the Aja and Gaucho sessions;

http://www.computeraudiophile.com/co...iophile-Part-1

I know it's a bit off topic but he is a big part of why the album is so incredible.

I saw them last year on tour at DAR Hall in DC playing Aja and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. And yes, Home At Last was phenomenal. We were sitting right behind the board so the sound was probably as good as anywhere in the hall and we could hear every note that everybody played. The whole band seemed to really be enjoying the show too.

Awesome song. That groove by Bernard Purdie is amazing. Here's the "making of" clip.

Letterman's band keeps playing Home at Last on the commercial breaks. I've caught them playing it maybe 4 or 5 times in the last month or so. Awesome song. I have been in a deep Steely Dan/Fagen solo mode lately...
