Steve Khan/Anthony Jackson Parting Shot

I picked up this CD last week and after several listens, I find it kind of boring. I loved earlier by the two, Suitcase and Public Access are great. I had very high hopes for this one after talking to AJ last year and hearing how excited he was for this to come out. Maybe I need to hear it a few more times but so far it's just OK.

First listen or three...did not blow me away like earlier Khan/Eyewitness releases.
I agree...just "OK" so far.

Just got the album and have listened to it about 3 times. It's a very different approach from the earlier records, like Khan says it's a real Latin Jazz record.

The songs and solo's aren't super exciting, but the groove and overall sound is fantastic I think. Amazing sounds coming from the percussion section, and Anthony's playing is very mature. Perfect sound & time, and very economic. The 6/4 song's bassline is fantastic. If you like AJ's playing on Michel Camillo's records I can really recommend this one.

The record might not be as 'heavy' or complex as e.g. the Suitcase, but I dig the general feeling more. Also read Khan's statements on live playing v.s. recording, which is interesting when comparing this (studio) record to the Suitcase (live).

I greatly prefer AJ's playing on the Camilo recordings to this. His lines and the music in general are much more interesting. Also, I haven't been able to listen to this CD on my good system, only in my car, but it sounds like AJ is mixed a little low. But again, that could just be because my car stereo sucks.

The Suitcase (2008) was recorded in 1994.
It's a trio doing the Eyewitness material & most of the material on that release is now well over 20 years old. Years ago, I bought a boot of that show (unknowingly) when it was a 3-disc set called Live In Koln, Germany 1994.
So, for me, there's no comparing The Suitcase with Parting Shot.

I mentioned in a different thread how Parting Shot reminded me of the electric "Latinized" tunes from Headline (damn, which is also 20 years old!).

Something kinda similar in that it's quality material with quality musicians:
Manu Katche's last 3 ECM albums. Nothing that will knock you in the head...nevertheless, a very, very nice listening experience.

Both those things might be true, but are those criteria for liking a record? I think for this type of music the kind of basslines and mix work very well. It's not a bass-centered album, and both AJ's and Dennis Chamber's roles are very different (and more restricted) from previous collaborations.

I finally got this recording and am totally digging it.
I always dug the drums and percussion in the other Eyewitness recordings so I'm very much in tune with it.
