Did you ever hear the original version of Strawberry Letter 23, written and performed by Shuggie Otis?

One of my all-time favorite bass tracks. So tastefully done. I bought this vinyl LP when I was just a little kid, many years before I picked up a bass for the first time.

The original Shuggie Otis version is cool too. It's just a great song!

I would have no idea how to approach this...once you really haer it it's got some really cool nuances that are hard to pick up behind the music.

It's so percussive. Every little ghost note is in the groove. Louis Johnson has said he often approaches his bass like a drummer would approach a drum.

And the note selection is so tasteful. There's nothing technically prohibitive about it--except for the creation process. Therein lies the magic.

It's no wonder that Michael Jackson had him play on his Off the Wall, Thriller and Dangerous albums

And props to Shuggie, this tune is unclassifiable, like nursery funk or something.
OK, trivia time- What well known but non hit 1970 instrumental track did young Shuggie play bass on?

I think Quincy Jones was the one responsible for Louis' involvement with those first two albums.
