So, guys, I got some new monitors, and I wanna know what are some good tracks for testing the playback...
What are some good Recordings that are Pretty high fidelity? What tracks do you TBers suggest I use to hear some great recording, fidelity wise...
I have a pretty diverse collection of stuff on LP, MP3s, and a few hundred CD's. So far I've listened to:
Dave Brubeck - Time Out
2 Aphex Twin Albums
and some Jaco stuff
What else you got? |

For sure you should be getting more detail and may be hearing parts you never thought were there.
When I am mixing I try to listen to a recording similar to the project I am working on. To tune my ears in I listen for every detail of every instrument, where it is placed, if there are any added effects and it's volume level in respect to all other parts. |

The big rule of thumb, of course, is to listen to things similar to what you're mixing. For detail, my fave is XTC's _English Settlement_. SoundGarden's _Badmotorfinger_ was one of the picks the TapeOp article mentioned.

If you've got a good clean digital copy, not the old played-out vinyl LP! |

KO | Mayor Of Simpleton was the last thing I listened to last night before bed...
I tend to go the other way and try to listen to something VERY different from What I'm about to record. I think it makes your ears more "fresh" to the sounds you are about to record.
My reasoning... Psychology
So you get exited about seeing a live act, and grab the CD for the tour you are about to see. You've listened to it to the point of knowing every nuance. When you show up to see said act, your ears are now expecting a certain sound. When the show is over, you are disappointed at the performance.
That's not to say I don't do some a/b'ing of some similar stuff during mastering Quote:

I've converted a few directly to MP3 and needed very little tweaking, to get a better than CD quality MP3...
And I think I have that album by "the Dan"

song: "Right Next Door (Because of me)"
If any part of that song sounds harsh to your ears, move on to the next pair of speakies.

I Like Robert Cray, just don't have many of his albums... I'll make a note of it.... Good suggestion's keep 'em coming!
