-that upon hearing, would make you think, 'Wait a minute- that's not _____, is it? You can NOT be serious- NO one does THAT! Hmmm- that's actually really cool...'
Example: I've done Hush Little Baby & You are my Sunshine in a Clash-esque, early-ish punk vein; it went over very well. I'd love to butcher Dress you up by Madonna or something else entirely inappropriate.

I think it could be done but my bandmates think otherwise. Old Donovan songs would be pretty fun to me too. Sunshine Superman, Hurdy Gurdy Man... Maybe even Mellow Yellow. |

That said, we whipped out When U were mine last night- leaning toward a live Prince version, although I was doing a DOO-DOO doo-doo faux-synth bassline, ala Cyndi Lauper. GREAT fun.
We also played Signed, Sealed, Delivered- and by not opening w/the trademark descending riff, it's not totally obvious what the tune is until the singing comes in. Also a keeper.
I snatched the mic for a sloppy wack at Cocaine Blues- guitarist & drummer were trying for the Cash vibe while I aimed for Thorogood's take. I think this one will come together w/some study.
I'm psyched- these guys were pretty anti-cover, and so am I in the traditional pop/top 40 crap manner, but there is so much outside of those constraints.
Anybody else?

Ironically, an old friend just sent me a CD w/a early-to-mid 80s hardcore version of this tune I did w/a local punk band called Neonate- there is truly nothing new under the sun.

| | | | One time when our guitarist had a short bout of nausea at a gig I figured I had to come up with something quick. The song that popped into my head was that retro sounding song from the 90's...Groove is in the Heart by Dee Lite. Immediately the kit and singer jumped in. Sounded pretty good. We regularly do it now, nobody expects a metal band to do that song. |

| | | i heard a band play Sitting on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding with like reggae style playing. sounded awesome. Thinking about, changing some surfer style songs to hard rock/metal could work. Like Jan and Dean - Little Old Lady from Pasadena to like a punk song would be sweet. but there are already good covers such as: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrlPuveLAAw
saw them in concert, very good by the way.

That line actually works really well played heavy & distorted, and we had a few people who thought it was actually one of our originals, since the lyrics weren't exactly discernable. My cuerrent band also played a show with a Hardcore band, and they did Lady GaGa's "Poker Face", it actually sounded cool.

And by great success, I mean that we were sufficiently out of our minds to think it was a great idea. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
