It seems he was reading while playing. A bit too sterile for my taste. I like a bit more funky ghost notes and triplet playing in my swing.

I gave it 30 seconds or so, but couldn't go any further. No offense here - honest - but this is like karaoke for bass players. To judge a sense of swing (or pocket, groove, etc.) you've got to be playing live.

Well I wouldn't say that Vroom mate, but his time's funny (there's a couple places he's dragging against the playalong and click) and I'm just not convinced by the sound he's getting.

The publisher, Chuck Sher, sent me a CD of a group he plays with; Chuck's had some hand problems and doesn't play upright anymore but his walking feel and sound on electric really were happening.

DeeDubya - if you can't make quarter notes swing, no amount of crap you tack onto them is going to make them swing.

I feel ya. Just my preference. His swing needs some soul!

KUNGFUQUA'd!

Doc-
You want swing on an EB?
Try Jimmy Fielder from Blood, Sweat & Tears...I assume you have access to "Spinning Wheel". Check out Fielder during Lew Soloff's trumpet solo.

Other EBers who swing-
Tommy Kennedy ("Swunk" from Dave Weckl Band's Synergy)
Vic Wooten (check out "Hurricane Camille" from the Flecktones' debut album...I assume you have that one)
Oteil Burbridge ("Plain Or Peanut" from ARU's In A Perfect World)
Jaco ("Fast City")
Alphonso Johnson
Anthony Jackson
Will Lee
Jeff Andrews
Oskar Cartaya
John Patitucci
Jimmy Johnson

Thanks for the list Jim. I know I have heard many bass guitarists swing, it's just that I am not a jazz player at all, and my assessment of good swing is lacking.

Hey Dr. Cheese, check out this video:

First solo is Dave Buda, then Jim Stinnett, then Steve Bailey. Tom Arey on drums.
