| Switching Tones in Recording

I use a variety of footswitches to alter my tone live (ABY for different amp channels, Sansamp, Hartke VXL, all set to a slightly different flavor). I am curious about how common it is to use an array of tones in recording a single song.
Does anyone use multiple "clean" tones while recording, or know of examples where this has been done?
