TB Electronica, DUBSTEP, D'n'B Denizens. Who Should I be Listening Too?

Sign in to disble this ad
Sorry G; if this the wrong forum.

Educate me. Who should I be looking to for inspiration? I don't want to rip anyone off but I do want to develop a style. What has influenced you and what are some of the "tricks of the trade".

I'm a pretty new to most "electronica" to the point that I'm pretty uneducated when it comes to subgenres etc. so I'll just rattle off some of what I've been listening to lately to give you an idea of my tastes.

Of Course Jojo Meyer's Nerve, but also...
Sneaker Pimps
Portishead
STS9
DJ Shadow (particularly Preemptive Strike)
Alias (somewhat more hip hop)
Squarepusher
Chromeo
Thievery Corporation
Boards of Canada
Tabla Beat Science

(lots of trip hop on there)

It's really a chore to find people who are interested in making people dance. Most everyone in this town wants to play tired Jazz Standards,...or melt peoples faces off or just abuse their ears with teh (poorly executed) brootalz metalz. That's fine I love aggressive styles but I want to do something that other bands aren't doing in this town which is make people shake their rumps. Vocals can suck it because no one can hear vocals on the crappy PA systems at the local venues. I almost feel like I have to do it myself.

Check out Uri Caine's Bedrock stuff. Jazzy, but crazy, electronic and D&B at the same time. Blew me away the first time I heard it.

Here's a taste of it:

I don't mind a bit of Miloopa. Some of it might be a bit cheesy, but it isn't too bad. Mainly, I just like Bonds gear, but the album Unicode is pretty cruisy.

I was actually checking out some Miloopa the other day. I wasn't too hip on the MC'ing by the guy with the guido accent but musically it was good.

Moloko. "Things to Make and Do" is a good album to start with, if you aren't already familiar.

In the same vein as above:
The Album Leaf
Air
Emeliana Torini (spelling?)

Also, browse copies of Electronic Musician at your local bookstore; they always have interviews with current artists.

Oh, maybe you could copy and paste all the suggestions into the OP, kinda like a sticky

i'm listening to a healthy dose of Benga's "Diary of an Afro Warrior" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMR5K2QWfJk

and Dom and Roland's "Through the Looking Glass"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYK8epECW9k

There's a small but flourishing DnB scene here in Singapore and the peeps are pretty good tastemakers. I usually tune in to http://www.meshradio.sg for some ideas.

Give Daedelus a listen, really unique sound.

Bluetech and Phutureprimitive are pretty cool.

Datsik has some massive Dubstep.

Check out the track Whomi from Tipper, crazy sounding track.

I like these two guys a lot,...especially Rebel MC.

I guess I lean a little more towards jungle, d'n'b.

I did get The Audience's Listening by Cut Chemist.

As far as all these go Trifonic I'm really excited about,...thanks GOrilla.
