I came up with an idea today that I have not seen done in the bass guitar section of this site (but im sure it has been done before). The contest is who can play and record the best version of Teen Town over the midi recording I made. If this works out I would like to do more with different songs. I will post the bassless recording once I have the approval of people on this forum that it is a good idea. I am ready to post the song so I am just waiting for a response. I was also thinking of making categories from beginner to expert where I will pick easier song to record. Please ask questions cause I am giving a brief description cause I have to go run to my big band rehearsal. So let me know what you think cause I really want to start this |

I think that a little friendly competition is a great idea, but only if it's a consensus vote, not just one person, deciding on who did "best".
^note - didn't say "right"^ |

I doubt there will ever be a clear 'winner' because all of what we do is so subjective. However, I know that I am always looking for 'jam tracks' to play over and as we all explore these tunes I think it will provide a great 'common' learning ground. We can discuss all sorts of different ways to play through the changes in the traditional role as well as discuss our different approaches to 'blowing' over the changes.
Almost a 21st century version of pedagogy.

There are thousands of sausage swinging bass videos out there but I suppose there is room for a few more. Good luck, and may the biggest bratwurst win. |

N.B. Teen Town -versions- would have been a little better title ; )

I was thinking it would be judged on right notes, closest tone to recording and I was thinking of making different different tempo play alongs. The goal is to have it to the tempo of the recording. but thats where the whole beginner to advance would come in. If people on TB want to vote on submissions I think that would be better way to vote on best version. I just came up with the idea when I was working on some play along files I am making for myself so it is still very fresh so I am really open about it and input is very appreciated.
I didn't have the mind-set of it really being a competition but more on the lies of just give some people more drive to learn bass standards. I see it in every instrument but bass guitar. I am very open to what a bass guitar standard can be from YYZ to Tool to Red hot Chilli Peppers to James Jamerson to Jaco Pastorius. Plus if it was a contest I really dont have a prize I am still a college student after all ha. I also was going to hold it on youtube I just wanted to put it up here cause there are bass players here. So far the majority is a no on this idea I just want to wait and hear from more people before sending out the file. I was hoping this to be more of a motivator for people to learn some bass standards and really help find a sound they like. Quote:

Almost a 21st century version of pedagogy. | I think this is where the voting on TB would be helpful. The only time I would imagine some one blowing over changes would be over improv kind of stuff. I dont want people to be judge on that cause that more like judging a person and that should only be done when trying to get a group together. I was like more on the lines of really digging into BG standards trying to match tones trying to hit the not just like how they did on the record. Quote:

| | | | No thanks on the sausage, I'm vegan.
Sitting with this song for a few hours opened my eyes
To different ways around the neck.
I suggest every bassist checking out the tutorials that break this song down, regardless of vegetarianism |

It isn't really a competition at all, but the point is that every month someone makes or samples a loop with drums and maybe some chords and then differend people groove on it. Everyone posts what they came up with. It's actually a lot fun since it's not about nailing some difficult piece. Instead it's about the creativity and differend musical tastes. It's great to hear what jazz, funk or rock bass players feel like playing over the same loop and can be pretty inspirational. I've though about suggesting the same thing over here but never bothered..
