Their Satanic Majesties Request

I could have swore I hate the stones. But I listened to this album about 4 times today. Mindblowing stuff, clever, trippy, somewhat avant guarde.

I thought all they did was three chord boring straight forward rock, this album is intense. Did the Stones do any more albums like this?

Nope.

It was a commercial flop. It was their first stab at being a self-produced band...and they took advantage of it by doing whatever the heck they felt like. I like the fact that it's loaded with interesting intruments and sounds, even if it doesn't represent their best writing. Taken in context it's a credible effort - it came out in '67 when experimentation was rampant.

That's a damn shame.

I seriously can't believe how good this album is, especially compared to their run of the mill 3 chord rock stuff.

It's funny, I'm old and remember when that album came out, kinda an answer to Sgt Peppers. Most Stones fans hated it and still do, but I still dig it. '2000 Light Years From Home' with headphones rocked my little twelve year old world back then.

Cool! I'll have to check this out! I have always hated the stones with the exception of "jumping jack flash"

The Stones were a lot more than a three chord rock band.

They weren't virtuosi, but their music was always more about feel anyway, IMO.
I have an original 12" lp of SMR. I could only manage to listen to it once because I just didn't care for most of it. Perhaps I'll give it another listen.

Bill Wyman has said SMR was largely a disappointment, but he thought there were some good cuts on it.

As stated above, it's kind of their Sgt. Pepper, so if you like that kind of vibe, you'd probably like it.

Busker: Sorry, I really don't a bulk of the stones stuff I've heard. I like SMR because it's weird, I don't like their other stuff because it's not weird. I like weird.

FYI that the Satanic Majesties track "In Another Land" was the singing and songwriting debut of bassist Bill Wyman.
