Them bones bass track

Sign in to disble this ad
I found this bass track on youtube while checking out some metallica bass tracks. it's the bass track of them bones by alice in chains. there was one thing that suprises me about this bass track. mike inez uses a flanger pedal on his bass for that song. it doesn't seem that noticeable on the actual song but he really did use a flanger pedal. anyways, here's the bass track to them bones by alice in chains...Enjoy!

Yes, it is Mike Starr, not Mike Inez. Pretty strange sounding part though. I haven't heard the song in a while, but I don't remember this.

Oh that's right. they had a different bass player before mike inez joined the band. strange sounding yes, but it sounds cool. it's funny that it doesn't seem that noticeable on the actual song. but nonetheless, it's an awesome song.

I had a similar experience a while ago, I didn't notice Billy Gould was using pretty heavy distortion and flanging during the guitar solo part in Faith No More's "Epic" until I came across the isolated bass track and I must've listened to that song like a million times. If you listen to the isolated bass track, the distortion really rips your face off but in the actual song it's hardly noticeable. "Revelations" like that sometimes make me want to stop lugging my effects pedals to band practice but then again I use my octaver quite a bit these days and it's usually quite noticeable when I turn it on.

My question would be, what did the overall mix sound like without the effects? Even though you can't pick it out individually, the effects on the bass may have added to the overall density of sound, and the song would have suffered without them.

I go back and forth with effects. I just started playing with a new band that is much more blues based than anything I have been playing with previously. I was using just a Sansamp BDDI and a Boss Limiter. Then, I was recording some stuff at home for myself and I managed to put my wah and zoom effects processor and all sorts of other goodies back on my pedal board. Fast forward a few days and we were rehearsing Stevie Wonders "Superstition". On a lark, I decided to play the melody with distortion, wah, and some phaser... just for fun. The guys loved it... so I guess I am going to play a crowded pedal board again... not that I mind....

Come to think of it, you're quite right. I used to use a dash of distortion during the verses of a ballad my band did to keep it from sounding too cheesy and while the distortion wasn't that noticeable in the overall mix, it still added a certain "something" to the overall sound. Too bad there's no easy way to check how certain songs would sound with a clean bass sound, though. Another song that I never knew (and would never have guessed) had a bass track with effects is Pearl Jam's "Alive", by the way.

Just a thought?!?
But as the tracks are usually ripped from g****r hero, that might have something to do with the effects.
"them bones" was on guitar hero 2 and was a cover by Wavegroup sound the band who did most of the songs on the early games "as made famous by".
I had a listen to the guitar tracks on you tube and compared them to the original back to back and they don't sound quite right.
If they are the original tracks I stand corrected, but how did the guy get the originals?

As far as I know, the guitar hero guys signed contracts with the record company suits which gave them access to the original master tracks. If you are good at things computery, ripping the songs from the video games they're in is no big deal.

Oh wait, so the first two games don't use the original master tracks? Then I have no idea where the original could be from, either.

eh.. it was the 90's. all of that grunge music was doused in chorus. thats one of the reasons i love AIC bass so much. especially jar of flies. rotten apple had a noticeable effect on my playing.

and the way this thread is going, whether or not your effects are noticed.. i know very few people really get into my use of chorus. likely doesnt cut the mix as an effect. in fact, i think it pulls me back in the mix a bit, and thats why i use it. slow chorus will take the focus out of the bass, i feel.

when i kick in my distortion or talk box.. then heads turn.
