Tic Tac Bass - (the style)

Sign in to disble this ad
Been readiung a bunch of books about bass history lately and the Nashville Tic Tac bass style keeps coming up, so I Youtubed what they consider one of the best examples:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=k9x_1Ri3XxE&feature=related

I picked a live version because you can see the bass player in the solo (2:08).

Very cool sound on a Fender 5 (or six) nice effects.

Any other great examples? post 'em (with YT link if you can.)

Thats not what I don't really know to be TIC TAC.

I thought it was the sound on old Patsy Cline records Where you here a double bass and this guitar/mute sounding thing doubling the line.

Aj

Can you give me a specific song to look for, where it is noticable?

I too thought that TicTac was totally different...I'm just going by what I read (The Fender Bass)...any help is appreciated. I just re-read the quote in the book, and I was wrong, this song was given as a good example of the Fender 6 sound.

Put on some headphones and listen to classic patsy it sounds like a muted hollow guitar it's the very front of the bass note. Try listening to the upright this provides a little pop to the attack.

Ok, I think in patsy albums it's mixed hard left and Bass is hard right. It's a busy version of the bass line they seem to line up on certain phrases but the guitar(that what it sounds like to me) just plays more.

it's really loud on Back In Baby's Arms

Andrew is correct, the tic-tac bass doubled the bass lines and was played on the six-string Fender. Harold Bradley the VP of the AFM and President of Nashville Local 257 played many of those parts. He and his brother Owen were a big part of the early Nashville sound.

Wasn't the Tic Tac bass the old Six string Danelectro Long Horn bass doubling the upright?

It was any baritone guitar doubling the bass line.
