Today was a big day (picture included) :)

I play bass in an indie/rock/pop band called The Dialogue from Baltimore, MD. After putting out our debut record "All I Thought Impossible" only a mere 4 months ago we are back in the studio. We were initially extremely happy with our first record, but found that the material we were writing post recording was much more of the sound we were maturing into.

Fast forward, today I finished tracking bass. I was able to use both my SVT-Classics through two different 810's (all American gear). I personally set up 3 basses for the effort and ended up using an 05' Fender American Jazz on 4 tracks and a 71' Fender P-Bass on 2. We used a Kiwi and a 421 to mic the cab and the Radial JDI to take the direct. I realized I wanted an Avalon u5 for recording purposes and for the live show (more controlled tone than the direct from the head) and ordered a used one for $350! that should be here in a few days.

The record sounds incredible, pre-mixing/mastering. I think this will be one of the best records I'll ever be apart of! I'll post when tracks are up. I'll also post when I upload some video footage of the recording process.

Thanks for listening to my rant

Congratulations!

It's a really great feeling when the "day 1" tracking mixes sound great.

p.s. That rig is no joke!

Yeah, it's insane! Drums, and all guitars went so fast and it's all sounding amazing. To now have bass on the track makes it just that much better

Totally no joke rig I'm a tad young at 22, but I know what I love and that is real deal amps, cabs and basses. I can't get into the newer amps of most brands. I like tubes, transformers, magnets etc.!

I think my next purchase will most definitely be an Aguilar DB750 or 751 with a 4x12...such a beautiful tone. Paul Turner or Jamioquai has totally sold me!

After that maybe a REDDI to add to the live and studio mix.

That is, after everything I've tried (fuzz, distortion, overdrive wise) I have found that my favorite two things to use are the Russian Big Muff and the Maxon OD-808. The only pedal that comes to mind that I have not been able to try at home is the English Muff'n which I think I'm going to order off of Guitar Center's used site tomorrow to try it.

I'm not a big effects guy, just love some fuzzes and overdrives.

Jeesh. Kids these days. Why don't you get back to us when you're playing with some real gear?

421 and a kiwi. i dig.

i use a 421 regularly and have used a kiwi for vocals on a session before. i really dug it. not entirely sure what id make of it on bass, but you seem happy with it.

any chance you could get ahold of the raw tracks and post them?

Sonic - while cutting vocals tomorrow, i'll see if we have time to bounce the bass tracks...i'll break it up into 3...kiwi, 421, and di...the kiwi sounds amazing by itself. I don't love the DI by itself, but my Avalon u5 should be here any day now and I'm sure that will be the missing link.

f'nar - thank you for the kind words. what you hear on the myspace is the first record...the new record is 100x what you are hearing now , nonetheless, thank you for the compliments.

vers - thank you so much.

architect - thank you as well.

ive never liked a DI anything, so your assessment that it doesnt sound as good as an SVT (or 2) doesnt surprise me

i very much await these clips. if this thread gets buried and i manage to forget, please PM me about it.

Last night I took home a copy of the songs we are working on. Like I had stated initially We recorded guitars/bass with a DI and two mics. Drums we miced up as usual and used a great field mic to pick up nuances of the drums. We have been diligently mixing everything for perfect tones and last night what I took home was 3 tracks that we feel are "tone mixed" to 100%...we are focusing on only 3 of the original 7 that we recorded. The 3 strongest will be sent to people we are talking to.

Within the next 3-4 weeks I anticipate mixing and mastering will be complete and I will be able to let everyone hear. I'm pretty anxious to get the ball rolling again as we have not been playing as many shows.

Very exciting time

Thank you for listening to my banter!
