today's metal scene

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm 37 years old, been listening to the same things for the past 25 years.
Black sabbath, metallica, slayer etc...
On the radio i'm listening to classic rock.
But the classic rock station we have here started to play some newer band.
2 songs that stand out so far are:
preistess - Lay Down
Billy Talent - Devil on my shoulder

Is there anything from those band or similar band I could check out?

I would say just take a look at relapse records and nuclear blast records roster of artists. I would say these two represent the direction of current metal.

Examples: Meshuggah, Dying Fetus, Deicide, Necrophagist, Immortal, Dimmu Borgir

If you check those out and they are too heavy and bad ass then you could always check out roadrunner records. They contain the softer "radio rock" like nickelback, slipknot etc.

I think Mastodon represents the clearest and most cohesive evolution of what those metal bands started.

There is, as with all genres, a sort of cross contamination of metal and hardcore lately. Some of the younger kids I jam with (I'm 22, they're still in hs) are really into Whitechapel, Despised Icon, The Acacia Strain and bands like that. I don't know, but something puts me off about tuning drop A# and playing the B on the 1st fret and just letting it chugga chug chug. Maybe I'm just getting older, but Between the Buried and Me and Mastadon are my favorite metal bands right now, because while they have agression and all, there are intricate parts which are tastefully put together and have some emotion, not just chugga chug weeedly weedly AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!

OP, check out Whitechapel, Gojira, Obscura, Black Dahlia Murder, Between the Buried and Me, and the Red Chord. Metal is branching out these days.

so far the bands posted don't really have much at all to do with the songs the OP posted, probably because neither priestess or billy talent are considered "metal" anymore.

here are some bands similar to priestess, who are generally just considered "rock" nowadays:

White Wizzard (skip to 2:00 to get straight to the music)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8-zehtCs7U

Valiant Thorr
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhotSBFQzFQ

The Sword
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9KbmRTgigQ

I'm not gonna be much help with the billy talent song because that particular song isn't really anything like most of their other stuff. generally they are considered "post punk" or "post hardcore" and get compared to groups like Rise Against, The Refused, and Alkaline Trio, but that particular track is very 80s inspired and reminds me more of Skid Row or something.

Anyhow, I hope that helps. and if you want some more recommendations for bands similar to priestess I can give you A LOT more, those were just off the top of my head and I got bored with looking up youtube videos after the first three.

I'd say give Shinedown & Alter Bridge a listen, they're two really good bands & are somewhat similar to Priestess.

are you being serious? I'm interested to hear a song by either of these bands that sounds similar to priestess. can you post a link? all I've ever heard from those bands is radio/pop rock. no disrespect intended, I really am curious.

OP,

I'm a year older than you and have a very similar timeline too.

I've been listening to Meshuggah since their first album; they have continually impressed me. The Mastadon recommendation is spot-on as well: the entire discography is great.

As things stand RIGHT NOW, there's so much schism'ing of the genre that it's a task to keep up. My advice is to hit Youtube with a list of whatever's been suggested and go from there. Likewise, it wouldn't hurt to make an account on Last FM. Just enter in, say, your favorite metal band. That "radio station" will now play anything users have attached to that band; i.e. - in a similar vein. You can "love" or "hate" tracks, which will keep them in or discard them from the rotation. After doing this for a few hours, you'll have a pretty sizable list of tracks you enjoy. From there, it's just a matter of getting the albums.

But, yeah: so much genre-bending these days, it's hard to know what "category" something fits into sometimes. Funeral Doom, Black Death metal, Metalcore, etc. Do not worry about getting caught up in any of this stuff. If you like it, if you think it sounds good...then good for you.

Another place to start would be to Google the top metal albums from, say, 2009 and 2008. Various sites' lists will differ, but you could at least use that as research, then head to the sites I mentioned above to give 'me a spin.

Good luck! And "Metal Up Your A**!" (I still have that t-shirt!)

Well, to me they do have alot of similarities (both Priestess & Billy Talent are quite poppy to my ears, but debating that is really quite a silly thing to do), but hell, different stokes for different folks & all that.
Maybe take some Maylene & the Sons of Disaster, The Plight or He is Legend for a spin, they might be more your cup of tea, so to speak.

I think for an old school metal The Sword is a great band! To me they're a perfect cross of early Sabbath and early Metallica.

I got hold of the Priestess album on the strength of that song, which I kept hearing on my girlfriend's Guitar Hero game. Be warned, the rest of the album is pretty dreadful.
