Tommy the Cat - 4th or 5th in the riff?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, i was just learning tommy the cat today by listening to the recording on sea of cheese. during the riff that repeats throughout the song, does claypool hit a 4th using F# and B, or does he hit a 5th using E and B? i pretty much got it all figured out n it sounds great both ways, but i'm kinda bad in music theory and its hard to distinguish 4ths from 5ths in recordings. thanks

(btw, anyone looking to get a bass...i really reccomend skjold design! i love my bass more everyday i play it!)

The recording is done on a 6 string, so he's hitting the
E above the B, when he plays it on a 4 string, he hits the F#.

In the powertab which is apparantly out of the songbook it says the diad in the main riff is:

C|-4-
G|-4-

However I've always played it like this:

G|-4-
D|-4-

Why? Because it sounds right to me. I just don't hear an E note in there at all. I don't really care what the tab book says, really. I say when in doubt, trust your ears. There's also tabs that say the chord is:

G|-4-
D|-2-

...***? It doesn't even sound close to me.

thanks all, i will try all of them n see what sounds right. as of now i'm tuning my g string up to an A and baring the 2nd fret. but according to the songbook he playsa fourth? and the only way to get the fourth sound for this song on a 4 string is F# and B...hmmm...
