That Tone You Gotta Wind Back and Hear Again

Sign in to disble this ad
So yesterday I was listening to some stuff on a local oldies rock station and "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin comes on. The guitar lick opens and then there's this delicious double on JPJ's bass before Bonham comes in. The bass tone, sort of doubled and distorted was wonderful. And I wanted to wind it back and hear it a few more times. But I couldn't...damn radio!

So...what bits of bass on recordings make you want to wind the track back and loop it a few times to soak up the tone?

Gary Willis "Self Defense" from his REH instructional video, Progressive Bassics. It's like the perfect fretless balance of clarity, grit, grunt and aggression for my ears. Too bad he doesn't play that particular bass anymore, I don't hear this in his tone with his current signature bass.
Also, anything by Paul David Harbour on David Chastain's "Within the Heat" - it's like Billy Sheehan with knowledge of music theory and a J-pickup added on more varied ( than Yngwie ) neoclassical metal.

Anything by Burke Shelley of Budgie has killer tone. I think my favorite is "You Are the Biggest Thing Since Sliced Bread", the coolest bass tone is around 2:40 of the song.

Also, Paz's bass tone in the Entrance Band's live version of Grim Reaper Blues is super smooth distorted blues bass yumminess.

Speaking of Led Zeppelin, I was plugging in and getting ready for practice the other day when my drummer starts randomly banging out the beat to "When the Levee Breaks", so I immediately without thinking started into that killer main riff. He's younger than me and he's not familiar with all of the Zeppelin classics, so he asked me, "Is that from something or did you make that up?" So I walked over the computer and pulled up the song on youtube. He was blown away by Bonham's drum intro. What a great band that was...

First ones that came to my mind (all original studio versions):

- The 7/8 bass riff from Rush's "Tom Sawyer"

- The bassline under the guitar solo from Rush's "Limelight"

- The bassline under the first verse of Beatles' "With A Little Help From My Friends"

- That ultra-groovy fill near the end of Beatles' "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey"

- The final section of Beatles' "You Never Give Me Your Money" ("1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, all good children go to heaven")

- The middle section from Jaco Pastorius' "Come On, Come Over"

- The bass riff from Mick Karn's "Tribal Dawn"

- The bassline under the main guitar riff from Kiss' "Cold Gin"

- The intro from Black Sabbath's "War Pigs"

- My ringtone!

I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones I can recall right now.
