I have to give the boy props. I know I'm behind on this record, but I think it's pretty cool. There isn't anything ground breaking about it, but there was obviously alot of effort put into the compositions and arrangements and the playing is a nice combination of "in and out" by all the players. Some records in the bass player genre seem to rely on a real simple chord progression, a few weird scales and "kill" speed. Chasing Shadows has alot of feeling and I think Tony plays great. There isn't anything cold or calculating about his playing and when it's fast, it has that "go for it" vibe which I always appreciate.
Dig it!

I don't know much about jazz and I'm pretty sure what Tony is thinking when he was composing was pretty complex, but even someone like me can really enjoy the album. Even without knowing all the inner workings of the melody / harmony etc, it seemed so human if that makes sense. I really dig!

I like your comment that it feels "human" because there seems to be something basically pleasing about it on a rather fundamental level. I think it's just the "feeling" of it.

It's got chops but not crazy, confusing chops. Tony's solos are melodic, interesting, and very musical. He likes to use dynamics a lot in how he writes his songs, climaxing them towards the end and then resolving them. Chasing Shadows is a well written album, and played might I add.
BTW, he just came out with a new one recently called Unknown Angels. It's different than Chasing Shadows. It's very ambient, IMO at least, but it's still very melodic and musical.

As always with his albums, the production value and bass tone is sublime.

I'm looking forward to Tony's new one - I've really liked what I've heard so far.

Tony Grey is composing on a different level, I can't wait to listen to Unknown Angels but I'm going to give Chasing Shadows this whole weekend to soak it in.
This guy is great, I'm not sure how he's remained off my radar for so long. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
