Tony Levin is a great big phony!

YouTube - Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer (Live 93)

I'm referring to 1:41.
We all know he is an awesome tapper, but is this possible? Or is it just bad editing?

Before you respond: I'm a big Levin fan, no flaming/torching/burning/overcooking intended.

He's Tony Levin. He did it with his mind.

This album had tons of keyboard bass that either doubled or replaced Tony's work. I heard an interesting interview with him where he said he was VERY frustrated that he played this wildly funky bass part for "Big Time" and Peter ended up leaving only a 4 bar riff of his track in. The rest was a Synclavier bass.

So what are you saying? That he's tuning his bass for 5 minutes long? And you can clearly see the keys player is busy doing other stuff.

Probably just a "gettin' into bit" edited in by the video editor from one of the MANY cameras. Levin may not have even done his little dance at this point in the performance, but at some other time and then edited in. And, I would not be surprised if a lot of the music was re-recorded (including the bass), as if OFTEN the case for so-called "live" performances.

I've seen so-called live performances made from multiple days performances - as long as the venue and costuming is consistent.

I'll vote for a combination of all the above.

Levin IS the real-deal.

Levin

100% agree!

It's due to the video editing and not a playing issue.

Levin is the real deal.

My guess is editing. I find it hard to believe that TL would mime in concert.
Chances are they recorded several shows worth of audio and video and picked the best video and audio separately. The editor probably went "lets cut to the bald guy with his fist in the air here, that's cool looking" not knowing what a bass is or does.

If you look at 1:40, it shows the floor in front of the guy on keys as being empty, then at 1:41 you see the female backup singer walk from that exact same spot. To my eyes it looks like editing...

That's from a commercially released concert DVD from Gabriel, there is almost always post-production overdubs done on those concerts.

Actually it's the client (PG's production company) that makes those calls. The editor has some input but is basically the mule on the session, like a recording engineer.

But he's still good enough for his hologram to be able to play a real bass.
