Tracking a Fretless

I'm listening to a recording that I did for a friend about a month back on my fretless, and I sound way behind the count. I don't think my playing was that far off, so I'm wondering if it's just the nature of the mwah? Anybody else every experience this? How do you handle it?

It happend to me.
Because I love the sound of the fretless I try to let the notes ring as much as I can.
And then I am behind the beat.

behind is behind...that's true.

maybe you like (and wait for )the sound of the mwah after hitting the strings, so it delays your tempo.

Are we talking about Jazz music? It's allowed. Behind the beat...

To the O P, I know where you are coming from. I've re-written my bass lines(made them more "open" to allow each note to develop) with good success, depending on the arrangement.
