I picked this up friday and it is definitely the best of the posthumous Jaco releases, with maybe the best version of continuum on record. It is John Mclaughlin, Tony Williams, and Jaco. They got together for the Havana Jazz festival 79 and recorded then I believe tied up in legal limbo. Tony Williams just smokes and Joco really locks in. The first cut is a little to "free" for me, but the rest just rips. The recording quality is pretty good and far better the the Punk Jazz Jaco stuff in the down years. Jaco appears to be still at his peak and the playing shows. Most certainly a must for Jaco fans.

The first cut is amazing, I know its a bit "free", but the energy level there is unbelievable. Far greater than anything I've heard in a long time, jazz, rock or otherwise. Incredible.

I highlighted that in the thread I made about the record when it came out. John McLaughlin and Jaco is an absolute dream pairing. If there is one flawed track I'd say it's "Are you the one, Are you the one", simply because it doesn't stack up when compared to the version Hellborg and McLaughlin did. But overall, it's a very fiery, passionate cd, and those are the things I expect from McLaughlin. I think we expect John to deliver because of his consistency, and he does in spectacular fashion! |

I've got them both. While they are good, the live and unreleased CD has a lot of filler material. And the 30th suffered from "overchorusing" on Jacos bass. I thought both were mediocre in overall recording quality.

I don't know, I tend to look at it as a John Mclaughlin record first and a Jaco record second, but jaco is definitely on fine form here, even if the liner notes are somewhat apologetic about him! |
