Trouble Funk's Tony Fisher: slapping, popping and BITING!?!

Sign in to disble this ad
A YouTube of 80's band "Trouble Funk" performing "Mister Magic" live in Tokyo. Starting at about the 2:30 mark is an extended bass solo from "Big Tony" Fisher that includes some string-biting. What do you think: tasty? Or stomach-turning?

Wow, the 80s. Yeah, overall, I thought the clip was awful. I half expected Arsenio Hall to be in the background doing that circular fist thing. As for the bass solo, the nicest thing I can say is it wasn't my thing. If i was being a bit little less nice I would say that it was rather flavorless. If I was been even less nice I'd say it didn't really groove at all. But the crowd seemed to enjoy it so maybe I am just not the audience for this clip.

A band I was in opened for Trouble Funk. Groove for days. I thought their drummer was very powerful.

The "biting" thing is an old blues guitarist trick. It's been around at least since T-Bone Walker. Even Hendrix did it.

Trouble Funk!

WooHoo! This is the first time I have ever seen a Go-Go group mentioned in these forums! You don't hear Go-Go much outside of the DC/MD/VA area. You should check out Chuck Brown the Godfather of Go-Go.

I remember seeing this on Cue The Music years ago.

um, for the biting slap trick, light gauge strings, wide spacing and lots of clearance between the strings and the bass body....?
buckteeth would help too...
