U2's New album! No line on the horizon

Sign in to disble this ad
Already streaming on myspace and their official site...I can't wait for them to go on tour!

(I've been a lurker here for a few years)

I have an idea of what a number of people think of Adam Clayton but, he inspired met to learn bass and I'm really digging the bass on this one!

*goes back to lurking*

I managed to "find" a copy of the new album round my house (ahem) and there's a mix of stringing material together for the sake of making an album along with some good material. Some nice basslines on it though!

It's definitely not one of their best... really mixed bag of songs and nothing new going on really - plus I find Bongo's who political schtick tiresome... but the rock n roll machine must rumble on and I' sure the fans will love it (mostly). Just my $0.02

Rolling Stone gave it a good review, for what that's worth.

I have been listening to u2 for around 20 years nearly every day! I love clayton and i know he don't play like he is the best bassist in the word but you have to understand, that is u2's sound, and in some early tunes when they were discovering who they are and what sound they wanted he played some awesome basslines that required a lot more skill than the 8th note stuff he produces with the more modern songs. This d00d is a human metronome and i reckon after playing this long at such a high level he would be able to play most things, but that just aint u2... Im going to but the album today but from what ive heard already, i dont really like it, but thats more bonios lyrics than the vibe. "sexy boots"? na i think not bono

Ever since the early 1980's, when R.S. gave five star ratings to The Who's It's Hard and Pink Floyd's The Final Cut, I haven't been able to trust their reviews. That's probably narrow minded on my part, but unfortunately, when I've read some of their reviews in more recent years, I've sensed the same bias toward over-hyping the huge acts.

I haven't read the review of No Line on the Horizon, but so far I'm disappointed. I've been a huge U2 fan since I bought October in early 1982, and at this point I think No Line is their second truly weak album, along with All You Can't Leave Behind. It still has a few decent tracks, but they seem to have lost the ability to expand a single good idea into an inspiring song. Interestingly, Eno and/or Lanois get songwriting credit on most tracks, which to me speaks volumes about the band's inspiration level. I can't fault them for this, as they've had one of the best, most consistent runs of any band in rock history. IMHO, of course.

I'm hoping the new disc will grow on me, but I'm not optimistic.

That's worth......oh, about a nickel or two. Seriously, they have a habit of bashing innovative and talented bands, like Rush, and loving the same boring mainstream stuff we've all heard a million times before. Looking at their "Top 100" lists makes me sick to my stomach almost every time. I mean, Dave Gilmour isn't even in the top 80 for the Top 100 Greatest Guitarists.....sorry for that mini-rant. I just can't take RS seriously anymore.

I listened to this "thing" on Rhapsody yesterday. Once was enough. I deleted it right after.

What a hot pile of steer manure.

Is this the band that gave us October, War, Unforgettable Fire, Achtung Baby?

They will go on tour, fill stadiums, then each buy another chateau in France.

I couldn't make it more than about 30 seconds into any of the songs I tried to listen to on myspace. Boring, contrived, derivative, stale, bland, rip-off, poppy, mainstream junk.

IMO

First up - I am not a U2 fan. I listened on iTunes and nothing impressed me at all.

I've been a big fan since my sister brought home the 45rpm of New Year's Day/Treasure. This album takes a few listens to sink in (much like Unforgettable Fire did for me when it was first released). As people have stated, Adam's lines are much simpler than the early days - but that's what he does (and does well) - another day, another forum.

There are some strong "typical" tracks (title, Magnificent, Moment of Surrender), two surprises (Unknown Caller, Breathe), the rest are take or leave to me at this point, but that could all change in a few more listens.

Not a masterpiece and far from their best work, but good new music to add to the library.
