If I may be so bold:

YouTube - The Payback - James Brown - Live - Zaire 1974

Whatever you decide on learning, take it from The Man himself and hold back nothing. Find that pocket, get in it, get comfortable and stay there. Sell that Shiz for every last penny that it's worth. You're in for a fun ride :-)

If you can find it, get the Star Time box set. It's very comprehensive - most of the relevant stuff is on there.

No Bootsy...

...but I recommend The J.B.s Funky Good Time Anthology
Amazon.com: Funky Good Time: Anthology: Jb's: Music

...and Maceo & All The King's Men Doing Their Own Thing-
Amazon.com: Doing Their Own Thing: Maceo & All the King's Men: Music

Reissue of rare 1970 funk classic featuring the highly regarded saxophonist and the majority of James Brown's band who had quit to Doing Their Own Thing.

Get "funk power 1970". It contains the COMPLETE 12 minute long version of superbad, the 10 minute version of soul power, the 14 minute long version of talkin loud and sayin nothin, and more. Bootsy plays on every track, and once you hear the full versions of the songs I listed, you'll never want to listen to the single versions ever again, because tere are SO many amazing moments that the cut down versions don't have. Also, get "make it funky-the big payback". Bootsy doesn't play on many of the tracks, but it contains the 20 minute version of make it funky, and some of his other REALLY funky songs like cold blooded and mind power. IMO as a certified James brown fanatic, if you're going to own any jb albums, those are the most important to own.

In the Jungle Groove is crucial. The Star Time boxed set is cool as hell and definitely worth your time and money.

Some of my favorites James Brown is stuff from the JBs. I really dig on Food for Thought, Damn Right I Am Somebody and the Funky Good Time Anthology (2 Discs).

The Payback is a hell of an album, though. Check that one out for sure.

There It Is! is another mutha. Damn near too funky.

Just keep diggin and keep listenin. You'll find that there's a wealth of good stuff...
