Uploading to YouTube--sound quality loss?

I am trying to make some demo videos of a couple of basses and it's proving hard. I can't get the sound qualtiy to jive with what I'm hearing on my laptop before uploading. Is there a secret compression event going on when you upload?

Here's the first quick attempt as a test, I used a small file size (2 MB).

Don't even ask me about the weird "seizure" effect at the end. Then I noticed the sound was thin so I uploaded this higher quality version:

Somehow, it's only "hearing" my internal mic now! What the eff...

Any help recordings experts?

Listening to the first video on good headphones, it sounds pretty good to me. The second video seems to have been deleted.

YouTube re-encodes just about everything. There have been serious YT audio quality issues in the past, but these days they're doing a pretty good job. I don't hear any problem with your video. *shrug*
