Question velvet underground european sun

how do i get the sound form the bass in european sun, from the velvet. and by the way, how did he get it?

Play with a pick, maybe a mute, passive bass, lots of low mid, maybe a bit of upper mid, bit of reverb, record on really cheap low-fi vintage equipment.

Sounds like it's a bit compressed and slightly overdriven, probably because they overdrove the recording.

But the details? I'm not sure. I've wondered myself about the VU bass tone.

When the band gets cranking on song climaxes, and the bass sometimes plays 8th or 16th note walking lines, every so often it will walk high, and that really cuts through the band. A good example of this begins about 2:22 on European Son. Also this happens alot in I Heard Her Call My Name, off White Light/White Heat. It's a kind of wobbly cardboard texture, but I've never heard anyone else with it. I think partly it's because at those climaxes the recording equipment is pretty close to exploding...
