A Very Grandma Christmas

Ha, so my finance decided this year she wanted to get her grandma an album of christmas tunes that we did.

This is 4 of the 7 songs Granny Wellington is going to get, these are what came up thus far.

Sloppy sloppy sloppy, but that's totally raw/punk/st. angery. It turns out this album is taking some work to produce, so we are scrambling at this point. Intended for an audience of one, but dig if you want to.

Happy Holidays,
Milk Feet.

I don't know why, but everyone who's heard it so far thinks it's weird. It was an attempt at being as normal as possible. Thanks for the listen.

I don't think anyone can hate Christmas music. I don't think the music is as weird as the fact that you made it. It's a little weirder than most Christmas music but it's not like holy crap I think I'm going crazy and I'm really uncomfortable in my own body right now weird. I think Grandma will dig it. Grandmas usually dig home made gifts regardless of the weirdness.

It's kind of late in the game, but how could it be fixed? For if at any point we feel like next year requires more music? Because this was me attempting to be as normal as possible. I did add some floaty synthy type stuff for atmospheric purposes, but I felt they reflected my girlfriends floaty vocal style.

If anyone cares: Winter Wonderland and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas were added.

Well, if you would like my honest opinion, I can go through each right now with a good set of studio headphones to hear everything clearly, and I'll have my report on each song momentarily.

Personally, I actually do hate Christmas music. Maybe it's because I'm not exactly Christian? Maybe because the place I work plays a CD of 14 Christmas songs on repeat all day long, every day?

These are all just in my opinion, and am trying to explain this as objectively as possible:

What Child/Greensleeves: The bass is quite overpowering. It is just a huge sound that is overbearing on the rest of the instruments.

Oh Holy Night: Nothing that sticks out too much here, though the vocals do miss a few notes here and there, especially the highest note.

Silver Bells: Again, the bass is very overbearing in some passages, and the drums sound very much in the background. I don't know if this is what you were going for, but the drums just don't sound right, and the bass level was giving me a headache. All other instruments sound completely drowned out in my headphones compared to the bass.

Stille Nacht: The vocal level might be just a touch too loud compared to the piano, but I didn't hear anything else that stuck out.

Winter Wonderland: The instrument mix was much better in this one.

Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas: Again, the instrument mix was better than the first few, but this time the drums stick out a little bit, and they sound very dry. Other than that, nothing sticks out.

So there you have it. Please remember that this is just my completely objective outside opinion, and I tried to be honest, yet constructive.

Just curious, but did you use any effects on the vocals other than Winter wonderland? They sound very dry for a recording. I just wanted to comment that the vocals did some note fluctuating here and there. Not bad, but could use work. Also, a better drummer would have helped these songs move a little more fluidly.

I also wanted to comment on my original "confused" smilie post. I don't see that song on your myspace page right now, but originally you had a version of a song that was sung in a round, and it was just overbearing and highly confusing to listen too.

Thanks for the review. Yeah, the "Christmas is coming" is kind of a quick joke we put on the CD.

I do agree that the mix on almost all the tracks is awful. The main problem: The drums were recorded one mic method... one really lousy kit. The cymbals are all really thrashy and overpowering compared to the rest of the kit. Silver Bells especially because the drummer was having a real hard time playing along with it, he's primarily a guitarist, but a better drummer than I (which isn't saying anything )

The vocals actually had pretty thick reverb on them for the most part, I'm not sure why they would sound dry.

I was just concerned by the confused smiley, I assumed it was all 100% garbage. And I appreciate constructive criticism quite a bit. It's the only way to truly get better.

No problem. I was happy to help. I'm glad you understood that I was just trying to be as constructive as possible. I was not trying to be negative or insulting in any way.

Regardless of all I said, I'm sure your Grandma will love it. Good luck, and Merry Christmas.

Matt,

You Grandma will love it no matter how it sounds. I think that it is killer that you did something like this for her and she will too. Don't worry about it, she will dig it.

Woo Hoo, I'm sigged!

It's actually for my finance's Grandma. In her high school years, she was in musicals/taking opera lessons... her grandma was so proud. But she got a lot of jaw/teeth problems and had to have a lot of dental work. During the long recovery time she didn't sing because she couldn't, after recovery, she didn't have a real outlet for singing, it's not really a cultured area in terms of music.

So now, almost 8 years out of high school, she gave it a shot again for her grandma. As you can tell, she is a little rusty, and has been sick this entire month, so the results aren't mind blowing, but I'm sure her Grandma will be happy.
