I'm curious how they are going to sound on this next album with Rob Trujillo. I think as far as Metallica goes "St. Anger" was to Rob what "Justice For All..." was to Jason... Sonically at least Now if Lars could just stop hitting that metal folding chair...

I had Doomsday For The Deceiver on LP. One of my favorite over-the-top album covers.

| | | | I hate to bring the topic down, but I never got what people saw in Jason. He seems vastly overrated to me and not that great, maybe because I'm not drawn to players who use a pick that much. Same with Cliff, never got what was so great about him. That's just my opinion |

That's just my opinion | How about Steve Harris? Jason Newsteads greatness is subtle. I liken him to the metal version of Michael Anthony. Cliff Burton brought such a different dynamic to metal music at a time when all the bass really did was double the guitars. He added theories and harmonies within the bass lines that can be described as symphonically genius. Much like when Metallica played with the symphony on "S&M" and you could hear all of the amazing musical textures that could compliment their music, you heard Cliff making the bass line do all sorts of creative things. Metal is one of the few forms of guitar driven music where the guitars are actually an intrinsic PART of the rythmic force. The upside of this for a bass player, is the opprtunity to step away from that role a little bit and indulge our melodic side. Guys like Cliff and Steve figured this out and ran with it. |

| | | | I'm not really a huge fan of Jason Newsted, but that was a pretty cool video. I especially dig the guitarists. My only real beef with the vid was how slow the tempo was; the drummer REALLY let that tune drag.
I'd also like to comment on how James Hetfield wrote pretty much everything in Metallic, so don't give Cliff or Newsted TOO much credit for their work in Metallica. You usually have to look outwards to those people's other projects to see how good they are as writers. This is a good example of Jason's talents (which are pretty strait forward). For a look at Cliff's basslines, you might want to check out Trauma when Cliff was a member. Cliff's basslines then were pretty Geddy Lee-esque (except within the context of an 80's metal band.) |

The fact that you really believe what you are saying is FACTUAL, or that at 17 years old you think you know anything at all about how these bass lines were written considering much of that material was formed before you were even a tadpole swimmin'! |

Not to say that because anyone is older they have more experience, but as someone who has followed Metallica and been a fan for a long period of time, I pretty sure Cliff wrote his own bass lines, and was an imortant part of how Metallica formed their sound. If you listen to the difference between Kill 'em All, and Ride the Lightening, the two biggest differences in the bands make up are Kirk and Cliff, and those two albums could't be more different. Playing with different players on tour and in the studio, has a tendency to make an original bands material represent more of the personalities within the band... My guitar player writes alot of our material, and he may even have an idea of how the bass groove should feel, but I am the one who comes up with the original bass line that tries to compliment his guitar and the drums as well as I can. Sure, sometimes I double the guitar, and sometimes the drummer and I just do our thing while he solos. However, he never comes with a guitar riff and tells me "play this". If he did, I wouldn't be playing in this band.
And I apologize if I came across a bit harsh...

And Jason was picked up a little for his writing abilities, a little ironic considering I think he was stuffed into a corner for a while. THAT is hillarious, Lars out front, Jason in the back!!! I would think you want your strong rhythm players to be noticed.
Listen to Doomsday, and you'll hear some sick shreds by Jason. Also, Eric AK is an amazing singer. Too bad F&J always had that 10% cheese factor, I really dug them. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
