Yep. I just learned this one today, and decided to record a quick vid of it. Playing my DeArmond Pilot Deluxe bass strung with TI Jazz flats.
That was my first bass, so I've had it for nearly 8 years now. Nice and worn in, feels perfect. Plus with the Jazz Flats, it has a nice 'vintage' kind of tone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pa89o8rDAN8
Enjoy!

Enjoy! | Hey cool,
I played that with my teacher a year or so ago. Yours sounds good. It does seem a little simpler or different than what I remember, but you got the basic idea of the line.

And with the TI Jazz rounds on my Ken Lawrence now, and the TI Acousticores on my Kinal Kompact acoustic...it seems I've become a believer in TI strings all around

| | | | Man, that was cool, you have a good tone, time is good, but.....
Here's the thing: you come on a bass forum saying you're gonna play one of the greatest bass lines ever, and then you play your own thing on it?
While your "interpretation" is fine, there is nothing on the original that can be improved. If you want to impress me, play me the original line note for note. The same as I do. The same as I teach my students to. You haven't done anything but water down a masterpiece.
I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but if this was a guitar forum and someone said "here's a video of me doing Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" " and then put something up that was noodling around the original instead of playing the real deal, you'd get creamed.
A nice gesture, but really, play the original in all it's glory.
No disrespect. |

| | | | btw, you're stepping all over the vocal in the bridge with your "bassline". |

No disrespect. | Nah, it's cool. I hear what your saying, and yes; the original bassline is amazing and couldn't possibly be improved upon. I'm sure my 'version' is nowhere near as good, but that's not the point.
Generally, I really don't care for playing basslines note for note, exactly the way they were originally played. I know I could learn it that way, but what's the point in that? You've already heard Jamerson do it his way, and it's not an especially difficult line to play (technically). I'd much rather learn the chord progression to a song and then improvise my own lines over that to see what I can come up with on the spot.
I leave the note for note stuff for learning the melodies to songs on bass. Like I did with the head to Bloomdido: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5BCdNRJ1aQ
And besides, the point of this vid wasn't to impress anyone, or even to show how well I might have been able to play the song. It was more of a, "hey, I just learned this 10 minutes ago and wanted to record a bit of it on my DeArmond, since I love that bass/tone and haven't done any videos with it yet."
Which is why (I know) I'm stepping all over the vocals on the bridge. Because I just wanted to play a little more in the higher register, and spice it up a bit there to show you that tone as well
I'm not recording a new bassline for that song, I'm having fun with it

I mean, c'mon, it's not that technically challenging. I have an enormous amount of respect for Jamerson to come up with it in the first place (that's the hard part), but to sit around and play your favorite bassist's basslines note for note, sorry, but not impressive to me. I find it more impressive to put your own take on it, your own interpretation, phrasing, and styling. Add a little here, take away here, do something a little different here...etc.
When I play along to my favorite bassists, I first ask myself, "Can I play it note for note and exactly the same as so and so". If I can, great, now it's time for me to improvise a bit and add a bit of my own style. I think this is very important for creating your own style. It also helps you learn the scales, fretboard, and harmony. If I can't play it note for note, then I'll practice until I can.
I also like what you did on the bridge, Lokire. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
