But yeah, the music in this game has some pretty nice bass lines. Lots of video game music usually has, by the way, as (old-ish) video game music usually consists of songs put together by one guy/girl who's more concerned about the sound of the piece itself instead of trying to ape certain music styles that are played with real instruments. Also, when working with chip music, there were often very few voices available at the same time so you oftentimes had to use an interesting bass line to come up with an interesting-sonding composition. |

The sounds aren't too bad for 16-bit chipsets! |

| | | | So on the youtube recordings. How much Noise gate and compression did you use ? It sounds like Keyboard samples played on a keyboard. Absoltely no harmonic overtones in the sound at all. in fact it the dryest sounding bass I have ever heard outside of Sampled instruments. |

My favourite game music/song bassline ever... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vaBxXCH9b8
I learnt it (kinda)... it's quite challenging (for me ) but fun at the same time.

It's got some absolutely wicked arrangements by awesome musicians (norg, housethegrate, Snappleman, Braincells...). Check those out:
housethegrate -- "Walk on Water" (Hydrocity Zone): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKDYXjwNpqI
Snappleman -- Dead Batteries (Flying Battery Zone): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5WP-bzwWRY ( massively awesome, albeit synth, bassline here)
Snappleman, Ashane & norg -- The Doomsday (Doomsday Zone): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7jW48fWipE (the second part of the song, with the guitar and synth solos, is one of the most dynamic things I've ever listened to)
Warning: those songs will rock your pants off.

Anyways, I've always been a huge fan of Nobuo Uematsu (composed the music for most of the Final Fantasy series, Chrono Trigger, and a bunch of other games) so I put together a couple bass arrangements of his songs on my piccolo tuned bass, for those that are interested.
To Zanarkand (Final Fantasy X): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2t3SK3RUqVc
Aerith's Theme (Final Fantasy VII): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJpau_jttdI
Video game music is highly underrated, there's some really awesome compositions out there that get overlooked just because they were composed for video games.

Since we're on a VGM thread, I'll once again pimp my own video game remixing project: Grospixels ( Youtube channel), which I joined a few months ago. They're very talented musicians, and so far I've recorded 4 tracks with them:
Secret of Evermore (SNES) -- Staff Roll: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkEXutkKG-Q
Paperboy (everything ) -- Main Theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYe0pfRzRRs
UN Squadron (SNES/Arcade) -- Front Line Base: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdCLgC-Pwcc
Diggers (Amiga CD32) -- End Theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMAll22pac8 (this is a brand new track, released 2 days ago, please check it out!)
