Do you ever practice while sitting? Also, how do you record, and with what? Is your bass on full? |
I sometimes sit when I play, but when I need to reach the notes 12th fret and above, I find standing helps my left hand feel more comfortable, more freedom of movement, better access to the higher frets. I usually stand during 3-4 gigs (sit down on the breaks) because after trying chairs and stools, I find my back hurts less standing. I use a small padded rug to stand on, and that really helps, esp. when we play outside on cement.
I do run my bass volume full on, and tone close to full on. I run the bass through this device (KORG Pandora PX4D)
I run the stereo output into the sound input of the computer (iMac) and record video with either the built in iSight camera or an AIPTEK digital camera (cheap, but OK picture - terrible sound on the camera mic, though) I use the preset "STUSOLO" for solo pieces like this. On gigs, I use STUFINGER, STUFUNK, PICKER, or SLAPIT depending on the sound I want. I also play some guitar, violin and I sing, so I use a small PA for my sound in the trio. (The keyboard player uses a BOSE and the drums are unmiked) I can run my headset vocal mic into the PA, and it also works for miking the violin. I run either my bass or guitar into the KORG, and just switch patches to match the instruments.
Thanks again for your kind words! We are on snow day number 7 today (I teach HS orchestra) so I've had more time this winter to play bass.
