It was on VH1 classic. I think it's the best concert vid I have ever seen, even better than The Song Remains The Same. Who else has seen it, and what did you think?
(btw here was the setlist)

Tom Sawyer
Distant Early Warning
New World Man
Roll the Bones
Earthshine
YYZ
The Pass
Bravado
The Big Money
The Trees
Freewill
Closer to the Heart
Natural Science

One Little Victory
Driven
Ghost Rider
Secret Touch
Dreamline
Red Sector A
Leave That Thing Alone
O Baterista (Peart solo)
Resist (Geddy and Alex playing acoustics)
2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx
Limelight
La Villa Strangiato (Lifeson talks)
The Spirit of Radio

encore

By-Tor & The Snow Dog (shortened)
Cygnus X-1 (shortened)
Working Man

Great video! I love watching the whole crowd pogo - awesome sight. Actually seeing Geddy play keys, bass pedals and sing at the same time is mind blowing. I also like how you can choose to isolate just one musician - a guy I used to play with used to watch Neil Peart for the entire show.

The crowd singing YYZ blew me away the first time I saw it. Great video.

I didn't know you could isolate one musician! I have to give that another viewing. But then, whom do you pick? I love all 3!

May I also suggest Rush's "A Show of Hands" and "R30"? Both great concert videos. R30 shows on MTV's Palladium every week or so (believe it or not!).

Probably my favourite DVD. I've watched it SO much.

I didn't think R30 was anywhere near as good as Rio. A Show Of Hands is awesome, though.

I own R30. It's very good, but not as good as Rio. I think a lot of it has to do with the crowd's energy.

I totally agree. In an interview that I read, Geddy was asked about his ability to do so many things simultaneously and he said that he was a "mental pretzel". Rio is a great concert DVD and it is hard to imagine playing in front of a crowd that large. Rush always seems to have a great time playing which is why they have such good stage presence. The strange Alex rap and Geddy playing the "Girl from Ipanema" bass line in "La Villa Strangiato" are good examples.

The documentary about it is good too.

I think rush in rio is the best live show ever. The sound is just perfect, and the song selection is supreme.

i agree with everything that has been said here so far! It is a great live show.

It did surprise me that they opened the set with Tom Sawyer though.

Own it, love it, never get tired of watching it.

Check out Snakes & Arrows. Crowd is not as hyper but, awsome concert, with some excellent bonus content.

The audience participation really makes that DVD. I don't think it was the best as far as sound goes though. I'll leave that to S&A. But the enthusiasm that the band and the crowd has is mesmerizing.

Did you go see them on the tour for Snakes and Arrows? The way they opened that show was sweet.

Fantastic show, went twice to see it live. Love the HenHouse cabs Geddy uses now instead of the washing machines.

The DVD in my opinion was filmed much better then RIO.

I have to disent on this. I though the concert vid was horrible. It was all cut - cut - cut, from one shot to another within seconds of each other. No pausing on any of the musicians to actually see what they are doing. It sucked.

In the same evening, I also watched the video of Toto's 25'th anniversary in Amsterdam. Man what a difference. During a Steve Lukather solo, they would do a slow zoom in to his hands and you could tell what he was doing. When they played Africa, I learned a bit that Mike Picarro does when he plays that song because they actually took the time to show it.

PS. I graduated with a degree in radio / video / film production, so I know a little about the art of film making. I will admit that mat bias me a bit

I agree RUSH in Rio is awesome.
I also find REPLAY X 3, contains the 3 DVD's:
Exit Stage Left
Grace Under Pressure Tour w/ bonus CD
A Shoe of Hands

My fave is Exit Stage Left, Xanadu just amazes me.
