Wanted: Randy Jackson on Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I am a regular watcher of American Idol mainly for Ricky Minor and his band. The dude just tears up most of the covers they do on the show. I have heard ALOT of good stuff about Randy Jackson's bass playing but I have never heard him. Is there anyway that I can find some recordings or videos of him playing bass on the internet? Thanks!!

You might start with some of his early work with Jean-Luc Ponty, the jazz violinist....check out his wikipedia article, I think there's a good discography there. He's a MONSTER!

Dude can definitely play! He's done a lot of fusion work and toured with Journey for a while. He segued into production and band leading for Whitney Houston and others. I would consider him the most qualified to be on that American Idol panel! Why Paula Abdul is up there critiquing folks is a mystery to me!

Randy is also Mariah Careys touring bassist and yes he's a monster of a player.

I hate to burst your bubble but Randy didn't record that bassline! It was T.M. Stevens. Randy is posing on that vid! T.M. is also co-writer of that song and played on the other R&B hit from that same album titled "Tonight I'm Alright"!

I thought he was posing too on that video.

If that's TM he's doing one of the best Leon Sylvers impersonations I've heard.

Back in the day, I was able to play that bassline on my 'pencil necked' 4 string Univox bass with guitar like string spacing! Forget trying that on a 19mm spaced Lakland! My hands would knot up like a pretzel! LOL!

Happy birthday DW! Mine is next week (19th.) I started playing Christmas 1975. We are surely from the same era.

A great song that Randy Jackson recorded with Narada Michael Walden is Divine Emotions from around 1983.

He also played on Narada's Victory album which had a hot song called "The Real Thing"! Excellent playing on that one.
