Weather Report "Live At Montreux" DVD

First off...yes, Bruce I searched & did not see anthing (at least not with the wording I used)

Anyway, OK...this has been a boot for awhile, I'm just the kinda guy that rarely has a boot worth a crap fall into my lap.

This concert is not at all bad...decent sound & footage for 1976. Jaco had only been in WR a couple months. Nice pickup for a fair price, IMO. Shorter's a monster.

Athough given a lukewarm review in this month's Bass Player, Jaco's Live And Outrageous DVD is worth having...
CAVEAT: This is the exact same concert as Live In Montreal (from 1982)...I do own that on VHS & do recall buying it as an Import from AI (ouch).
Anyway, not jaw-dropping, but very decent video + sound. Jaco appears a bit subdued...his technique & ease of playing are prominately on display.

On a tangent-
A Santana/Wayne Shorter band (w/ Alphonso Johnson) completed my hat trick. This is from 1988...I haven't gotten to it just yet.

Didn't know it existed - so I know about the '78 concert in Germany - is this one very different?

I've found the WR and Jaco DVDs on Amazon UK and am now pondering whether to pull the trigger....?

Both about £10 - which is cheap for DVDs in the UK!

I ordered that from the Santana website & got it about a month ago. Mighty fine!

i enjoy this dvd MUCH more than the 78 show. im a huge weather report fan of all the era's and this video to me is more about the group and the music than jaco being a spazz.

I'm assuming the '78 show in Germany is the Young & Fine DVD + the same as what's included in the Forecast:Tomorrow boxset?

If so, then I would definitely rate this '76 Montreux set/DVD above that...in both picture/sound quality & playing.

I'm confused why Bass Player didn't review this along with the Jaco DVD.

They're all a must for any Jaco fan.
I still contend that the 1978 show, while not having the best sound/video recording quality, is Jaco's 'quintessential performance' (not a spazz at all IMO). I think some of Jaco's best grooving was with Erskine.

Watched the WR at Montreux DVD again...a bit heavy on the face shots (especially of Zawinul).

Well, I have to take that statement back.

Just yesterday I received my new Montreax 1976 DVD in the mail, and I watched it last night. WOW, it's like I've just watched this for the very first time, it's 1000% better than the old crappy 20th generation VHS boot that I got years ago. This may very well be the video containing Jaco that I'd recommend 'if you could only choose one'. But really that whole exercise of 'if you could only choose one' is rather silly when it's so easy now to own several.

If you don't have this one yet, I recommend it as soon as possible. It only took about 3 days to arrive and at $18 it's quite the bargain. Jaco really plays wonderfully on this!

CD Universe had the Montreux DVD for seven bucks, way cheaper than the sixty bucks I paid for the VHS boot years ago. I always dug the Montreux concert, it's before the baby-powder dancing and Jaco is more subdued, plus I dug him with Acuna & Badrena.

Sweet! I've got it on order, along with the "Live And Outrageous" DVD. Good to hear that it's excellent.

Got the "Live And Outrageous" DVD today. Haven't watched it yet, but I was looking at the package and I wonder why Jaco is shown as left-handed in 3 of the 4 pictures? Is that the outrageous part? Or are there idiots at the Shanachie company?

I noticed that too, they were even a little off in his age. You'd think they at least get someone who knows to proof read.

Got them both and digging them, now I have 3 DVDs to remind me of the times I saw Jaco.
BTW if you are in the US and see a copy of WR at Montreaux 1976, grab it it has been withdrawn here.

Have't got the WR DVD yet but the Jaco Live in Montreal turned up and maybe it's heresy but I don't really like it that much - it's kind of 'dated" - both in looks and sound!

So - I don't like the effects on horns and the tunes/arrangements are kind of "corny" ...?

To be honest I feel like I've seen maybe a dozen better gigs in the last year or so at my local Jazz club - in terms of musical interest, sound quality and ideas!

I suppose it's good in a way that Jazz has progressed in 30 years!

There are moments where you think - Jaco just did something amazing - but too rarely!

yea i agree with your comments about that performance. And the bass is mixed so low, you can hardly hear Jaco at all :s but he does do some nice things in that concert. Either way though, its essential for Jaco fans.
