Weather Report - Port Of Entry( NOT from Night Passage)

Here's a burning version of "Port Of Entry"
by Weather Report. It's from Hammersmith
Odeon in 1980, and the band is in top form.
Jaco's solo is amazing, with some very
dexterous runs. Another one of the countless
examples which prove that Jaco was an
excellent improvisor:

i dont think there was ever debate that jaco was dexterous. but compare this to the studio cut that he overdubbed. theres development of themes, call and response, excellent phrases along with precise technique. it ends up being an amazing solo. the live version doesnt quite display the same coherence. because of that it isnt as musical and if anything just reinforces the point. its still is a burning display of chops though.

The version from "Night Passage"
is also live. And his solo on "Havona"
was the only one from his catalogue
he supposedly overdubbed. Except for
"Continuum", which he overdubbed to
get that awesome effect.

And I never said that there was
a debate over his dexterity, I just
wanted to point out that his playing
was dexterous on this track

But of course( given that he knew
"Night Passage" was recorded to be
released officially) he could have
done something in the studio after
the performance.

night passage is overdubbed. he overdubbed it over joe's synth solo which is still faintly audible in the mix. the majority of boots i have of this being performed usually dont have a bass solo.

Ok. Yes, I've also heard quite a
few of WR/Jaco-boots, and Jaco
seldom solos on "Port Of Entry".

I've always thought it had to be overdubbed, if for no other reason than the high E natural during that last run that he would not be able to grab (at least not in tune as it is) if it were all live.

Still, burning solo regardless.

yeah, keeping up those tempos is a pain! growing up before i started playing bass, i always thought that jacos solo on night passage was a keyboard or something because it was so precise and dead on.
