On the studio recording, does Jaco play the opening line on bass? It's hard to tell imo :S

Octave repeats will be much more consistent on fretted. Jaco makes the right choice. What is amazing is how consistent Jaco's tone is, regardless of whether he is playing fretted or fretless.
