I started working on a solo transcription of Wes Montgomery's "Four on Six" today. This is where it's at so far. The first 3 choruses of his solo, except I don't have the last run up to speed yet.
Pretty challenging, especially the lick @ 1:03-1:07. Very rewarding though. Might take a while, but eventually I'll get the whole solo down http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8eVJxpOMrY
Enjoy!

There's one of Wes' licks in there that reminds me of a Marcus Miller song..! |

Two things though - first I personally would love to hear you improvise more, your transcriptions are great but it'd be cool to hear your latest solo ideas - second - can we see your face sometime?! The headless bass player thing gets a bit weird after a while
Keep up the great work
Cheers

Mike | Thanks. Haha. Here's "the face"
I guess my most recent improvisations would be here; Over a cool backing track I found: http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?PID=954890&t=2642
I should be getting a CD soon of a Jazz concert I did a couple weeks ago too. I remember I had at least one good solo there, on a pretty fast piece
Musicman: If you're asking if I figured it out myself, then yes. If you're asking if I've actually written it out yet, then no. I will eventually though.

| | | | Lokire, I don't have high-speed internet, so I can't comment on your playing, but just the fact that you've sought out this kind of music is impressive.
While you're in the Wes bag, go ahead and work out on "Body & Soul" for a while. After you've got it down, check out Wes' bass guitar version. You might surprise yourself (if you haven't already heard it).

So I know it pretty well, though I mostly practiced to the Stan Getz version (another one of my favorite soloists). Great song! I haven't heard Wes play it, didn't know he did it. I'll check it out
I don't have nearly as much Wes stuff as I'd like to. Just "The Incredible Jazz Guitar" and "Smokin' at the Half Note"
BTW: Even without a high-speed connection, you could still see it. Just leave the window open for a long time while it all loads first. Might take a while, but once it's all loaded it'll play smoothly. Youtube doesn't require you to stream the vid in real-time.

Do you just break it into chunks and memorize by playing it, or do you write it down as you lift from the record? |

I really need to continue working on my standard reading anyways. All my jazz band scores and Real Books are a good start, but quarter notes are only hard for so long.
Now what i'm working on is playing the bass and guitar part on my Chapman Stick... now that's hard.
