There aren't too many bands that I would put in this category but I have to say I really prefer Led Zeppelin's studio recordings as opposed to their live performance.

The Mars Volta b/c they are random live.
Tool since they play in arenas and they don't play older songs live.
Immortal since I'll probably won't stop laughing at their corpse paint.

I can't even stomach a Zeppelin live show. It's a sloppy guitar and whiny vocal fest.

Steely Dan's records were impecably recorded. Studio group for years. OK live
Funny Page story: Back in the early '90's I lived at Lake Tahoe. Jimmy had a Summer house in the hills of Incline Village (still does, I believe). A local band was playing at one of the bars in town. Page shows up very drunk, and wants to sit in with the band. They obliged of course, but he was so wasted he couldnt play very good. He told the guys he'd come back the next night to sit in again, He did. The next night he was not so drunk, and actually played great. It was all over the local paper the next day.

I just remember thinking, man, that guitar player is sloppy! Quote:

I like Queen but it was hard for them to duplicate their sound in a live situation.
I don't care for The Stones but they do sound much better in the studio.
This is a little off the topic but I recently saw a television show about the recording of Duran Duran's Rio album. John Taylor said that many of the slaps and pops were over dubbed and he couldn't play them live. |

Seen em twice (Load and newest tour) and absolutely hate the spread out nature of the "stage in the middle of the arena" setup they have been doing for awhile now. You never get full band interaction.
I also find their sound to be incredibly unclear live. The bass is mushy and the mix is generally abysmal. I will never pay to see them again

Dinosaur Jr. was a disappointment, because nothing could be heard other than the guitars.
I've seen RHCP twice, first time was the best ffing live show I've ever seen, the other was failure from start to finish. They rushed through a short set because they had to catch a plane.
