Question What do you think of Meshuggah?

Me, I think it's a really heavy and non-technical progressive that knows how to mix crushing riffs with wierd/spacey chords and leads. It's very rythmically confusing(in a good way) to say the least.

I think they are up there with Tool as one of the greatest bands going right now. These guys can take you on one crazy journey, you just have to surrender yourself to the rhythms. Oh, and im not sure what 'technical' is in the true sense of the word but if it means a drummer playing different time signatures with each limb and guitarists doing jazzy guitar solos from mars then I reckon these dudes are technical.

Well most (but not all) define technical as like blistering solos, shreding-Where it's more about how good the technique is rather than if what your playing is musical or not.

(This is not my opion really, but I've seen this as many people's definition of technical and just wanted to inform, that is all.)

I think if a band plays custom 8 string guitars, you're kind of required to call them technical. Not to be a hard-*** about it, I've just always considered them to be very technical. I think of them as "very proggy chugga-chugga" music.

Anyway, they're good, they haven't captured my imagination, but I can see how they would other people's.

Meshuggah was doing 15 years ago what bands today are just starting to try and copy.

Easily in my top 5.

yea, to me, they would be the epitome of "technical." they almost don't seem human. these guys are very very very good. a total crushing headtrip.

I'm a longtime fan of Meshuggah but I must admit that I prefer their older albums like Chaosphere, None, Contradictions Collapse, and Destroy Erase Improve to the newer stuff like Catch 33. I liked their faster style better than their newer stuff. Although I thought that the 'I' ep was pretty bad ass.

I can't believe how long they've been around...for I second I thought this statement was wrong, but then I realized Contradictions Collapse came out in 1991!!

I thought DEI and Chaosphere were interesting metal records, but I've been soured by the fact that I don't hear them taking huge leaps and bounds forward musically.

So far I've found nothing appealing about them, but I am trying, I'd rather like them than not like them (hey more music for me to listen to), but so far, it isn't looking good.

What riffs? It's just a bunch of one note syncopated hits with wannabe Allan Holdsworth solos.

They did influence a lot of crummy bands though.

Ok, here's what I'd like to know. When you post whether or not like you like Meshuggah, let us know if you're a drummer or not.

I got a theory goin' here...

I'm not a drummer, an yea i think these guys r great. I heard they play at half speed wen they practice which makes sense, cause i cant even follow along. When u think u'v got it, they do sumthing different. Also didn't they use a drum machine for catch 33?
